Notice that after His resurrection and before His assention, Jesus breathed on His disciples that they would "receive" the Holy Spirit.
"And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit." - John 20:22
Later, on Pentecost, the disciples were "filled" with the Holy Spirit.
"And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance."
- Acts 2:4
What is the difference? (And please don't say that being filled with the Holy Spirit means speaking in tongues because the Bible is clear that not everyone who is filled with the Spirit speaks in tongues, 1 Corinthians 12:30.)

It is the same.
Speaking in tongues was just one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. But bare in mind that when they spoke in tongues everyone heard it in their own language since it was the day of Pentecost and you had Jews from other countries who spoke different tongues. It is not the false speaking in tongues being practiced in some Church's' today.
There are only three actual examples of speaking in tongues recorded in the Bible (Acts chapters 2, 10, and 19). If we look at these three cases, we should find a clearer picture of this controversial gift.
"When the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven [divided] tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance." Acts 2:1-4.
Fire is a symbol for power. God sent this gift in the form of tongues of fire so they would know that He would empower their feeble tongues in the same way He strengthened Moses to go before Pharaoh (Exodus 4:10-12) and touched Isaiah's lips with a coal from the heavenly altar (Isaiah 6:6, 7).

Pentecostal rheteric. The Holy Spirit had not made an appearacne while Jesus was on earth. Day of Pentecost is the day the Holy Spirit arrived.
Read the bible and you will see that those who hear and obey God are filled with holy Spirit and the HS guides us through the Word of God. Anything beyond scripture is from man.

as a Catholic I can only speak for my own church,Jesus gave us(Christians) the two-fold gift of Baptism and the Holy Spirit, and the scriptures tell us that although the Apostles baptized in Jesus name they had not as yet received the Holy Spirit, this had to be done by the laying on of hands.
in the Catholic church there is after baptism the sacrament of confirmation when the Bishop lays his hands on the young person and says receive the Holy Spirit and this is to give the person the ability to live the Gospel of Jesus with the life long aid of the Holy Spirit.
as the person grows in faithfulness and obedience the Holy Spirit will fill them at the times when they need to witness to Christ and when the truth is to be discerned.

Receiving the Holy Spirit is the act of inviting the third person of the Trinity to come into our lives especially in a ceremony; while filled with the Holy Spirit is our reaction of unexpressed joy after we invoke that third person in indwell in us.

Okay this is my interpretation of it. If you receive the holy spirit. You have allow or accepted the holy spirit. Where as if your filled with the holy spirit you have followed the will of the holy spirit and are living as your life according to the ways of the holy spirit.
Abstract example.
You want to graduate school= so you attend and do the minimum to pass
You want to graduate and go to college= You attend and do all your home work and study ect.
the first one would be to recieve.
The second one would be to fill.
Hope you this helps.

"Receiving" means taking it up the a.s.s.
"being filled" means taking it in the vagina.
so men "receive" the holy spirit, whereas women are "filled" with it

The first involves gift wrapping and ribbons. The second involves a funnel, a length of garden hose, a small centrifugal pump, and a friend...
A really good friend.
