Depends what you want to do but in my school we used to go to local businesses for mock interviews and some of them would take pupils on for work experience for a week. An office is always a good place to start because there are always offices.
Telephone as many local offices as you can think of asking if they have any work experience vacancies. Remember you don't get paid for work experience so don't go too far away otherwise you'll have to fork out for travel expenses etc.

A company which actually deals in the work you wish to do when you leave school. It is hardly educational to do work experience in an abattoir if you want to be a hairdresser, circus knife thrower or a doorman at the Ritz. When you think you know what you want to study, look up the relevant companies, telephone them and ask if you can do work experience with them. Most are very accommodating as they get short term assistance for a relatively cheap outlay and at least you will learn if the chosen profession is for you or, having completed the experience, you need to choose something more to your talents and liking.

All depends on your age. If you are in your teenage years, then retail work experience would be suitable because it teaches about interaction and customer service. If you are between 18 and 24, then office work experience because it teaches you about structure and rules. If you have never worked before, then supermarket because it can teach all the above to all age groups.

It depends on what experience you want - office - hospital - vets - school etc. You should speak to a careers advisor who will be able to guide you in the right direction.
