Anything Australian! I read an article that said they can sell their wine cheaper because of the way they harvest their grapes (they don't hand pick the grapes). I think Yellow Tail Chardonnay and Shiraz are great at around $6-7 a bottle. Penfolds Merlot is really good too about $8-9 a bottle. The only Australian wine I've had that was only mediocre was Alice White chardonnay - not bad but not as good as the others but still good. Bottom line - You cannot go wrong with Australian wines!!!

You can get a decent cabernet or merlot out of California for between $6.00 and $10.00. Washington state is putting out a pretty tasty Gwertztraminer (white wine) for about $8.00 to $10.00. France and Italy all have these wines in a similar price range. Don't be afraid to try new names, read the bottle, look at the age of the vineyard (a well established vineyard should know how to put out a good wine). Even the Australian Yellow Tail wines are liked by many, both red and white (I personally pick up a hint of vanilla in their wines that I don't like). Happy hunting.

You don't say what type of wine you like, whether sweet or dry, but I go for a sweeter wine in white and therefore prefer German and Italian wines. My favourite white, which is not too expensive, is Niersteiner, sometimes the name Domtal is added.

As for red, I'm not much into it but I'm sure you would find a reasonably priced one in the Supermarkets. I'm not sure whether I should mention names here, but there's a German Supermarket where you can buy real cheap wines and beers?

Ah, I see others have mentioned so, if you have a Liddl Supermarket near you... that's the place to be! lol

ASDA do a good hock at only about £3.99. But it depends on what you are looking for. I like a fairly sweet white wine. If you like a dry one, this would not suit.
My other favourites are 'Nussdorfer bischoffskreutz' and 'piesporter michelsburg'.
Avoid liebfraumilch. It's the rubbish that no Germans will drink so they export it to England where cheap and plentiful to get bladdered with is more important than enjoying a glass or two of something nice.
Can't help with red I'm afraid as I never found one I liked.

Columbia Crest (Columbia Valley, Washington) makes an oustanding Merlot and Cabernet-Merlot all under $10 and rated 88+ by Wine Spectator.

Outstanding wine for the price but most importantly for the taste!!!

My favorite is the Two Vines Merlot 2002 - 88 WS

What do you like? Do you prefer sweet wine or dry wine? If you prefer dry wine, you should look for a merlot or cabernet sauvignon in red or a chardonnay in white. If you prefer sweet wine, the only sweet red wine I know of is Riunite Lambrusco (which is a "cheap" wine) but in sweet white wines you can get riesling, spatlese, auslese, or muscat -- muscat is so sweet it is considered a "dessert wine." If you prefer something in the middle, you could get a syrah/shiraz or pinot noir in red or a zinfandel or pinot grigio in white. Here's a list of my favorite white wines, all of which you should be able to get for under $20.00 a bottle: Fess Parker American Reserve Chardonnay Cambria Vineyard St. Catherine's Chardonnay Meridian Vineyards Chardonnay Zaca Mesa Rousanne Firestone Johannesburg Riesling Fess Parker Muscat Canelli Cambria Vineyard Muscat I'm not big on red wine and don't know much about it, but my cousin (who lived in San Francisco for ten years and IS big in red wines) really goes for red wine from the various vineyards in Napa Valley, California.

If your in UK try Morrisons - they have wines on offer all the time "£2.99 and they are nice - I am wine drinker and love a decent wine but Morrisons are inexpensive and not like battery acid as some cheaper wines are.
Look on www.morrisons.co.uk

go to a supermarket or wine merchant and either ask the staff, or read the labels of those around the price you want to pay. Look for special offers.
Wine is all about personal preference, so you need to like the look, sound and packaging as well as the taste to appreciate it.

Enjoy

A decent yet reletivly inexpensive wine that I always take to people's houses is either Turning Leaf or Woodbridge. You can buy them at wal mart, but they are still a good quality wine!
