If lol means laugh out loud, why do people put it on the end of their messages when it doesn't make sense.
Do people just put it on all the time whatever,
Am i the only person sick of seeing lol all the time?

You're not alone.

The "lol" was meant to illustrate the persons reaction at that very moment but I think it's become habit now. It's entering places other than chat rooms and messengers because people no longer know how to express themselves without it.

The person on the other side of the screen isn't actually laughing out loud all the time. "LOL" is being used in chats and forums to make light of a situation or something someone has said so the person reading it won't take it the wrong way as that so often tends to happen. It's also used as a filler when someone just doesn't know what else to say. I know because that's how I've used it myself during chat.

The "LOL" should definitely be kept where it was meant to stay and used sparingly. It should never leak into forums such as this where it just doesn't belong or make sense. However, it and other shorthands are a huge part of the internet culture and won't be fading any time soon.

Guess we all have to get used to it.

It doesn't annoy me. LOL at the end of sentence or paragraph, I take it to mean joking don't u?

If someone is making a statement and is giggling or laughing then LOL is inserted. But LOL use to mean and still does when I see it used like that Lots of Love as a salutation of departure.

It if it's really bothering u stop going to the sites or places where ur seeing it used. Email has abbrevations symbols... it's the nature of the beast so accept it or stop reading email. You do have a choice. how about create a new one for us all to use?

I personally don't use it, but some people put it at the end of a sentence in case they believe they sound annoyed. That is, so that the person reading what they wrote won't misinterpret the writer as being angry, annoyed etc... because with written expressions, it's easy to misinterpret someone's mood since we don't hear the sound of someone's voice.
How many times has someone apologized to you (by e-mail, I.M etc...) when what you wrote wasn't meant to be unfriendly?

No your not the only one sick of seeing it.
I think some people think they are funny or just have nothing better to say so they type in LOL... just shows a lack of imagination.

My mother puts it on her text messages! It drives me bonkers! I dont chat much online but thats the only time it doesn't bother me. But then again, if Im talking to my boyfriend online and he puts it, its cheeses me off!
It's computer talk and I think should only be used when talking to someone online that youve never actually physically spoken to!

When talking on the computer, we can't see people's expressions or hear their tone. It is just a way to be understood that a comment was intended to be funny. Otherwise, it can be taken the wrong way is all.

It is annoying - for years I would NEVER use it - now I sometimes do with the sort of person who understands and likes that kind of thing ie as a concession to them

No you're not alone some people do find it annoying. But it's an easy way to let people know your joking. Or to say someone was funny. It's the same as saying yw for your welcome. Just an easy way to say your views.

I think it is used too often as a way of trying to make outrageous and offencive comments somehow 'okay' - like saying 'only joking', even when they clearly weren't!
