Its an ingredient inside the mentos called gum arabic. Its the same effect as rock salt. As for Joey k who insists on ppl being dumb without actually knowing what he's talking about. Please check out this site.

We tried the mentos and diet coke trick and it was a WOW!
Impressed everyone from 6 year olds to jaded 30 somethings.. you take a 2 quart dietCoke and put a box of Mentos in it (you don't need to put in the whole box but ours shot up at least 50 feet!!

The Mythbusters did this trick on their show a few weeks ago it has something to do with the porous texture of the Menthos. I doubt seriously if anyone died eating them. The minute you chew them up the porous surface is gone and the carbonation has nothing to lift. They used to say people eating PopRocks and soda made their stomach explode but you have to eat a gadzillion poprocks in order for it to happen.

(btw try the trick with diet coke so there is no sticky after mess)

in the olden days coca cola syrup used to obtain to settle an disillusioned abdomen. i think of in case you drink it continuously the acid could in all probability be too plenty, yet i don't think of it may "consume up" your insides. the main significant ingredient that's risky to is your tooth. it is going to rot your tooth. The sugar in coke is in all probability the biggest area of it being risky.

You will not die. When I was 8, I tried it and I'm still kicking. Besides from getting a sugar rush, I was fine.
