Keep it tuned up & keep the tires properly inflated is a good start. A K&N air filter might help somewhat.

I have a 2000 3.0 4x4 automatic and I switched to synthetic engine oil and synthetic axle lube & went from 18 mpg to 19. I also get a little better mileage using premium instead of the cheap stuff. My next ranger is going to have a 5 speed instead of the automatic.

Some people should be banned from answering questions. Yes a throttle body spacer could possibly help you. It definatly wont hurt you. An 02 ranger doesnt have a distributor. and you have platnum spark plugs that are good for 100,000 miles. if you want to change them at 25,000 miles feel free but they will cost you. they averge about 10 bucks each times 6. That is 60 bucks a pop. no sense in changing them so soon that is not going to save you a penny. About every 30,000 miles you should have your injectors flushed. That is a Factory recommended service.

a spacer will not help,,for MPG change plugs 25000 miles distributor cap check for carbon tracking and burn't contacts i change all this in the fall change fuel filter in the fall ever year you won't belive how much dirt there is in the gas..change the air filter in the fall too, tires are to be inflated to spec/winter they will need check if temp stays below 30/keep 4x4 off.. light foot on the gas..if you live in a winter climate gas MPG will drop 2/3 MPG in cold weather as the gas is a winter blend for easyer starting..i have 250000 on my truck
