The best wine I have ever tasted is actually a pretty cheap red wine called "Lambrusco" it is very fruity and not at all bitter. I am not really big into wine and honestly I really don't like it too much but I love Lambrusco and there are a few pink wines I have tried also that are good. Also you might want to try a Pinot Grigio just so you don't try a stiff, dry, strong wine for the first time.

It depends on what kind of tastes you prefer. If you like a drier taste, I would go and find a light red wine like a Rioja, a Rose (not white zin which is a blush), or a Sancerre (a dry very refreshing white). If you like richer tastes, you might want to try an Australian Shiraz, or a California Chardonnay. And if you prefer sweeter tastes, I would go with a German Riesling, or Gewurztraminer. Even though I love (and collect) Champagne, I would not recommend starting with it.
One of the best ways to determine what you like is to visit a local wine store that has free tastings. They will not only allow you to try various types of wine, but will help you understand the various taste components of wine.

Start them of with something fruity....
Here are some good wines for new wine drinkers to taste, to help their palates adjust to the different sorts of flavors wines have.
White zinfandel
White Zin is the 'punch' of the wine world. Light, fruity, easy to drink, gentle flavor. This is a blush wine made from the red Zinfandel grape. They only let the red skins affect the wine for a short time before removing them - so instead of making the regular, rich, hearty Zinfandel wine, they make a 'light' pink version instead. Great with just about any meal, and perfect for summer picnics.
A good White Zin to try is Beringer, or Sutter Home

Wine and champagne tastes awful to be honest with you! It's rotted fruit. YICK!
I absolutely hate wine and champagne and I have never tasted a good bottle.
If you are going to drink, drink something that tastes good like a strawberry daquari, or a margarita.
You could substitute wine for grape juice, and then you won't get drunk.

Well for a beginner, you might what to start with something mellow and inexpensive.....like Arbon Mist. Everybody has different taste buds with wine. I perfer Merlot red wines, but others might perfer a white wine. You have to sample a few before you find one that you might like. There are some many different ones to choose from.

White Zinfandel is one of my favorites. It's a pink wine.
My brothers don't drink wine or champagne, but they actually loved Tosti Asti Spumante Sparkling Wine when they had it at a wedding.

Donelli Lambrusco (red) or Donelli Bianco (white). It's funny, I was just about 15 when I first tried these, sweet and delicious. Haven't had them in years but a friend pulled one out a few days ago, I laughed at the memory then tasted it and surprisingly I still enjoyed it.
