I had never heard this word before reading this question. Is it the same thing as China grass?

Carrageenan is a subsatnce found in red seaweed & is used for thickening, suspending & gelling. It has just been examined due to a cancer scare about it & no evidence was found to support the cancer scare so is safe to use in food products.

It's used as a thickener - a kind of seaweed. Some years ago it was identified as carcinogenic (cancer causing) and now you hardly ever see it in foodstuffs. However - it is still used (probably in Sunny Delight! together with all the other crap they put in it!

Isn't it a bit like porphyra seaweed? I think it probably can be used as a gelling agent or thickener in foods and things, possibly stuff like jams or deserts and maybe as that jelly in cheap pork pies.

It's a seaweed. I think it's used in cooking in Ireland, as you would use spinach, and in soup.

its used as a thickner in shampoos and creams as far as i know. isnt it a type of sea weed too.
