there would be far less cases of child sexual abuse in churches?

In the JW religion, children are taught the Bible by their parents, as well as with their parents during five different meetings a week. They are not separated from the adults to learn just Bible stories, but are treated as equal to the adults in learning the Bible..

Aside from what you may or may not think of their beliefs, by teaching children in this manner, there is no opportunity for an adult to take advantage of a child. Wouldn't this be a better way for all religions to do. Having the children learn from the parents creates a closer bond between them. Teaching children, as well as teenagers, right along side their parents, shows respect for the ability of these young folks to learn.

There would not be a need to place children into a position where someone other than their parents would have any power over them, and shouldn't that be the ultimate goal, to protect the children?

Actually, the majority of accusations are made against a family member, usually a separated father, but less than 5% are found to be true. In 70% of the cases of divorce, the father will be accused of sexual abuse of the children. It is a simple allegation to make and requires little proof as judges will rule on the side of caution.

Finding God is a personal journey for all. One can only expose his/her children to religion and teach them good manners.

Individual people corrupt, not general religions!!??!! There is no superiority. Stop that.

You know what? You've got a good point there. I'm not a JW, but was raised as one for years by a couple of well meaning people who didn't quite stick with it or understand it all. They let us study the books and stuff on our own, but we did do required book studies many times together with an outside member, and we did speak up (answer questions) when called upon at the meetings. It did wonders for self confidence to be seen as useful and studious in an arena outside of school, and also we felt like, as you said, equals to those older than us. That's why a lot of the kids who stay JWs tend to be seen as little professors at school; they are treated as and then act like little adults, and can be counted on to behave maturely and "right" most of the time.

Pat (above) has an excellent counterpoint. What if the JW family is beating the crap out of each other or otherwise hurting their children?

What got you thinking about this? Are you a JW?

I am not at all enamored of the JW at all. Not that i do not think they should be allowed to worship as they please but i do not like it when they come to my house and leave me tracts or magazines talking about their faith and yet they never seem to listen to me when I say I am already happy with my own religious belief system. How can a child be expected to understand some of the concepts the bible teaches if they cannot even read themselves. Some of the things the bible says go behind an adults comprehension and I think it is sort of useless to read it to a child as if that child were an adult. I do agree that the parents should take the time to sit down with their children and be the beginning of the foundation for their own belief system to be built upon.

The majority of child abuse cases come from family members. I'm not saying that JW are better or worst parents than anyone else. What I'm say is, that if the children at the greatest risk from parents or family members, how is this method of teaching children going to help?

People who work as sunday school teachers have been screened and monitored in normal churches, longer than the JWs have been around. Treating adults like children which you have to do if they learn together is cult behavior designed to keep the parents in line because children don't understand adult doubts. Day Care Centers, not Sunday School is where most abuse cases are found, often with tacit approval by parents who have no personal relationship with God let alone their own children.

Jehovah's Witnesses abhor abuse and domestic violence. Their children sit in the same auditorium as their parents, so children also become quite familiar with the frank way these subjects are handled by the bible and Jehovah's Witnesses.

Witnesses fully understand that their role as a religion is in providing comfort to the victim and her family, warning to potential victims, extolling Christian peaceableness and righteousness, and eventually perhaps in couseling a repentant sinner.

Government workers such as police and prosecutors are generally empowered to pursue criminal matters. Jehovah's Witnesses always work in obedience to secular law and deference to the personal decisions of victims (and their families, where practical). Jehovah's Witness ministers do not investigate criminal matters, leaving such matters to law enforcement authorities.

An unrepentant baptized Jehovah's Witness who is found guilty of a secular crime is likely to be disfellowshipped (or "excommunicated", although Witnesses do not use this latter term). However, a sin against God's supreme authority is clearly a different matter from a sin against secular superior authorities. The standards for criminal conviction and forced religious disassociation will never be identical.

Yes, indeed!!

The congregations of Jehovah’s Witnesses are like a safety net for young people. The Witnesses are happy to assist any who want to learn of the marvelous hope ahead. The comfort brought to those who seek a relationship with their heavenly Father is great, since the Witnesses are trained to provide counsel and direction from God’s Word the Bible. One Witness explains that young people need to be shown that the disgusting situation they may find themselves in is disgusting to Jehovah too. The Witness states: “Jehovah does not want children to be abused. He does not want them to be unhappy. But he doesn’t want them to exchange one form of abuse for another form of abuse—abuse that they get out in the streets. They can reach out to mature individuals in Jehovah’s organization to talk about their problems and to be shown the way out.”

For children whose hearts are receptive, God’s Word provides a powerful incentive to avoid the snare of peer pressure.

The next time you meet some of Jehovah’s Witnesses, ask them to show you how you too can learn more about the joys just ahead in God’s incoming new world of righteousness. They will be happy to assist you to see how God’s Word can bring much comfort now and eternal life later.

The problem is often it is a parent or family member that is sexually abusing the child. So no that wouldn't help. The cases where it is a member of the clergy are a small percentage.

Does protecting thier mortal lives tranlslate in their eternal salvation? The JW's do not believe in the deity of Christ. I believe the ultimate goal of any religion should be salvation. Children should learn about God according to their ability to understand. if you consider some religions have no spiritual understanding to teach it would seem appropriate that children learn with adults or vice-versa. Most Christian children learn the meaning of John 3:16 in Sunday school as young children. Many adults in some religions still have yet to grasp it's meaning.
