They're unrelentlessly pushy, they call back even when they have already been told the person is not interested, and then they wonder why so many people hate them.

Oh boo hoo...it's my fault that they're high school dropouts with absolutely no skills in anything whatsoever?

If they're not, then they surely could have found something better or at least less annoying.

lovely, like I said BOO HOO

When you enter the field of telemarketing, unless you're mentally retarded, you should KNOW that you're going to be hated, and rightfully so, because when you call people at all hours of the night without regard to their privacy or their schedule they have the right to be mad at you. So excuse me if I haven't started crying and saying how wrong I am after hearing your little sob story.

Let's face it, if YOU had failed at every other job you had ever done, until you had sunk to the depths of telemarketing, would YOUR personality be all that great?

I disagree about hanging up:

1 - the free-form rambling of a 4-year-old is a great idea
2 - tell them the person they want has just died (and burst into tears)
3 - talk nicely for five minutes, and then ask them what colour underwear they have on - do not deviate from the topic until they hang up
4 - ask for their home number and tell them you will call them later (thank you, Jerry Seinfeld)
5 - ask them to hold the line, put the phone down, and then go and do something else for half an hour
6 - keep them talking for as long as possible, be very interested in everything they have to say, make them work that script (at least half an hour) - and THEN put the phone down and go and do something else
7 - ditto 7, but after about ten minutes start asking totally random questions that have nothing to do with the topic
8 - make an appointment to see one of their salespeople, but ask for it to be at a ridiculous time - I once got a salesman to meet me at 2.29am; when he arrived at 2.30 I told him he was too late.(even ask to meet somewhere else, like a mtorway service station)
9 - keep talking but whisper, AND make them shout by claiming you are deaf
10 - get a big old-fashioned police whistle and blow it down the mouthpiece of your phone

Oh, and when their supervisor calls back to tell you off for abusing the first caller (happened to me three times so far)? Well, then that's when you can really go to town ... he he!

True, they can be annoying but they're really not jerks. Most are just people trying to make a living. They work off of scripts and are given large volumes of randomly selected phone numbers to call. The numbers shouldn't include people who have indicated they don't want to be bothered but, depending on the company, they may not use this practice. Any telemarketer who carries on without regard for the qualifiers (part of the question technique) are morons. You have to "know" if the person is going to buy or you're just wasting everyone's time.

Point I'm taking; I've been on both sides of the phone and it's not a great way to make a living. Like any job though, it only takes a few to end up giving a bad name to all. Ask a New York Cabbie!!

The thing is when we encounter things that opposes us, or even that we dislike we tend to see that outside source as something unpleasant...namely, in this case 'jerks'. Rarely do we look at our own emotions or our own actions...
The thing is telemarketers are also doing a job...just like sales people at stores. Their job requires them to be confident, aggressive, and a bit relentless...which yea, can seem 'pushy'...everyone needs money. We should be happy these people are actually doing something, instead of, like, stealing or something. All we can do is have patience and keep telling them we are not interested, if that is the case ;)
Dislikeable situations should not cause us to be jerks :) that is the important thing, i think :>

A lot of telemarketers don't get paid per hour, but get paid according to how many new customers they got for their products. They're not all high school dropouts, you know. A lot of them are currently in high school, and telemarketing is the easiest job to get. I do find them annoying myself too.

Telemarketers are not the worlds most educated people on earth. They have nothing going for them. Telemarketing is not a job you do full-time. It is best to do it part time as a second income.

Bill collectors are also a good example of this. They are crass, rude, no manners.

Many tel marketers aren't even calling inside the USA. The are just trying to make a living for themselves and family. They are not as lucky as we may be. However there is no excuse for rudeness, I polity say no and hang up, if the call is returned again I sternly and politely tell them to remove my name from their list.

In Canada (Ontario, anyway), all you do is interrupt them and say : "Please take me off your calling list, thank you." And they are obligated to stop their spiel and do as you ask. The phone company gave me this piece of advice in an insert in my bill one month. It works. Since I found this out I have hardly any telemarketers call me. Apparently, once you ask them that, it's against the law for them to continue to harass you.

I believe they are people just trying to put food on the table. it sure means they are desperate for a job, if they can choose to do telemarketing for a living.! The best thing is for you to state clearly that they should put you on the do not call list, it works.

Usually they are taught to deceive and be pushy... they have little in terms of education. It's scammers trying to scam and do it within the letter of the law... and they prey on peoples greed, trust, or the elderly or young.
