LOL-Welcome to the club. My 20 yr old son had holes big enough to put his thumbs through. (Yes, it was OH so attractive!) Anyway, he got a real job & had to remove the plugs. The holes have grown together, but the lobe is stretched out & there's a slit like scar. It's not great, but it beats the enormous holes.

i personally have 1/2" earlobes, and have done for about 9 years - if i take the jewellery out they'll shrink right down again within the week. it's only at the point when the earlobe loses it's 'spring' and becomes a floppy unsupported dangling piece of skin that it won't shrink back any.
there comes a point when you have to let people make their own choices in life. people suggesting he'll regret it when he's older is the weakest argument i've ever heard in my life - YOU might regret getting married in 30 years time, YOU might regret having a mortgage in 30 years time. of all the regrets a person can have when they're 60 i wouldn't exactly say pierced ears is at the top of the list.
to incinuate that just because someone does something like get a tattoo or piercing makes them incapable of considering their own future is ridiculous and patronising. 30 years ago no-one had heard of a navel piercing but now every teenage girl feels the need to get one. in another 30 years 'new' things like subdermal 3d implants and coral implanted horns will be increasingly common - why should getting two huge lumps of silicone rammed into your chest to improve your confidence be considered 'normal' and then decry other body modifications?
stretched earlobes, piercings, tattoos, have all been around since the beginning of time and they'll continue to thrive long after the "it's gross" people are dead and buried - we don't do it to please you lot anyways we do it for ourselves.
if it's a choice between making my body look the way i want it to or looking like a blank boring lump of meat for the rest of my life i know which way i'd sway.

I have done this to my ears as well, although I am a 22 year old female.
And to many of the people who have previously answered this question: No, it is not "gross." As long as you take care of them and clean them properly, they are just fine. Keep your rude opinions to yourselves.
Mine are stretched to a 0 or 00 gauge. (I go back and forth depending on which of my jewlelry I have in them.)
I have a friend whose ears were stretched to the same size as mine, and when he took them out, they eventually closed up to look almost normal.
Several weeks ago, one of mine came out while I was sleeping, and in the few hours that I was not wearing it, my ear closed up quite a bit and it was rather difficult to get the jewelry back in.
I'm not sure what size your son's ears are stretched to, but if they aren't stretched too much, and he stretched them properly (without causing a great deal of damage to his ear lobe), there is a chance they might return to something near their normal size.
If they are stretched to the point where they won't go back on their own, there is a type of plastic surgery that can be done to repair them.
As for the details about that, well, I'd go talk to a plastic surgeon. I'm sure it wouldn't be the first time they've heard of something like this. :)

Well it depends how big the holes are. If they aren't very big then they may heal on their own if he takes out the jewelry. If they are very big, Plastic Surgery can help. They wont look 100% normal but will be closed up. the time will come when he grows up and he will realize his gauged ears may have looked cool when he was a teenager but not on him when he is 30. He will find it very hard to get a job, well a normal job. unless he wants to work at a tattoo place or something he is all set.

I have no idea how they will be repaired, they may close a little naturally, but if the holes are very big I suppose there will always be a hole ! I've often thought about that too, in the future we are going to have thousands of old people with these horrible piercings all over there bodies and worse....hideous tattoos ...what on earth are they going to look like when they are in their 80s and 90s still sporting animals and daft words tattooed on their bodies ?

if you take out the guages, if they aren't VERY big, they'll close up eventually, but usually at least one ear lobe will be disfigured from scaring. you can also have a surgeon cut the ear and sew it to a normal shape. it's not that hard to do, and i don't think it's that expensive. let him be how he wants, and as long as he's not doing drugs or anything horrible, then he'll survive and grow up to be a good guy. he'll decide what to do about his ears when he doesn't want them anymore. many jobs don't care about stuff like that anymore. there are also skin-toned ones so that it's less noticable.
i wish i knew how streched the ear lobes are...their measured in guages. you should have posted that.

It's not the latest craze gee... and no it's not gross for people in other countries like Africa have massive lobes and even have the stretchers in their lip.
I have them done and I was concerned about when I get older but then I look around my town in Australia and there are a fair few adults - grandparents who still have them. They can't be fixed when taken out unless the hole is 8mm if bigger then the only way is to remove that dangling part of lobe by cosmetic surgery.

Ur getting many answers from people that have no idea and just want to state their opinion. I personally have my ears stretched currently to a 00. I've taken them out previously when I was at a 0 and they shrunk back to basically normal. I've since stretched them back. If he stretched them properly and didn't skip sizes and waited to heal in between stretches I'd say his ears will be fine, depending on the size of coarse. Usually 0 or 00 is cinsidered to be the "point of no return" and he may have to have a simple surgery to repair them. And since we're all giving personal opinions on here...I personally think they look beautiful, and there's a feeling of fulfillment after each stretch.

I think it is horrible! I always look at them and think, 'wow, you are gonna regret that when you're older' because once its done i am pretty sure you are stuck with it, as I have seen pictures of tribes with dangly ears!
I dont think they could even be stitched up as the lobes will be stretched, which would result in mis-shapen ears...
In some ways its better to have a tattoo to regret rather than that ear thing because the ear thing actually deforms a part of your face, imagine going to job interviews in the future with big loops for ear lobes! Sorry that probably doesn't make you feel any better.
I had my belly-button pierced 9 years ago, i think i will always have a hole there, which is why i have just left the jewellery in.

My boyfriend had 2g earrings in his ears when he took them out the just grow back together. Mine are pretty small compared to his. they actually don't look as bad as it would seem, they just look like you ripped your ear lobe. I really don't see what the big deal parents have with earrings and piercings My mother still tells me not to get anymore tattoos and piercings and I'm 22 years old, there is nothing "gross" or "trashy" about it, body modification can be spiritual for some people, to me it is self expression and art!!!
