The following view was expressed in the Asian Voice, 11th November 2006, by Mr Manzoor Moghul, Chairman, Muslim Forum, Leicestershire, UK.

Significant parts only reproduced here.

"However.....when the veil becomes an obstacle in the interaction between those women wearing it and the rest of our society, especially in terms of when identification causes social, cultural and political difficulties, those practising it should have enough flexibility in adapting themselves to the practical needs of the society in which they live...............
.........................................It is time that the Muslim community began to mature and instead of hiding behind sentiments of hurt and offence, they should have the belief that they are able to argue their corner convincingly and with confidence"

(These views are of Mr Manzoor Moghul, Chairman, Muslim Forum, Leicestershire, UK)

Is this view, by a Muslim, unlike some, not entirely moderate and fair?

All I know is that veils are one of the security threats to our country. When I went to uni we had a few terror attempts and threats.

During this time all students except those wearing veils had to show id cards. What is all this about. Im not rascistat all but shouldnt it be one rule for all?

i think its totally up to the people wearing the veils, isnt it? Islam says that wearing a full veil isnt compulsery and that muslim's can change religious things 'like removing the veil' if it gets in the way of socilising of living a normal life in this westernised world. So from that point its up to the women wearing them.I have friends that wear the full veil and iv got to admit they make themselves look like ther seperating themselfs from commuintys but they no this and still choose to waer it for realigious reasons and if they stick by it then fair play to them, they should be judged! everyone shouldnt treat muslim women any different just because you cant see ther full face, ther still a person with feelings. Also the veil is actually a fashion in some countries so to those ppl it would just be like saying 'ban jeans'

It's highlighting the fact there is a legitimate problem isn't it? Denying there is no problem will not make it go away or cease to exist. If you are a Muslim living in the UK, then like every other citizen that makes this country their home, you are obliged to take on board the traditions and customs of their particular customs, not necessarily the other way around, that is immature and blinkered thinking.

The veil issue is really tough. I'm not a follower of Islam, but I'm guessing that the veil represents centuries of tradition and custom, as well as a religious emblem. There are no easy answers.

Should the (religious) leaders of Islam publicly "relax the rules" to permit their womenfolk to exercise their own judgement in this?

give us a frigging break! all of a sudden the veil becomes the end of the world.

no i don't agree with what that guys says and i think that every man and woman should have the freedom to wear or not wear whatever they want. Muslims don't force non Muslim women to wear a veil then what the hell is the problem??!! let people do what ever they wanna do and for the love of God and all that is holy grow up.

this is a friggin joke.

Should we allow the vile evil veil to live in the 21st Century? I'm just playing with anagrams really, no malicious intent behind this.

The hijab has it's pros and cons. It's entirely the individual's choice to wear it or not and please note... it doesn't make one more "muslim" if she chooses to wear the hijab. Plus, if you research Arabia in the pre-Islamic times, veils and hijabs were already worn by women - so it's a cultural thing too

We are sharing the world, the sun, the moon, the oxygen, the water supplies etc. Why dont you try to be in peace and let people live in peace???? Is it so hard or is it just you cant be open minded like other Islam haters???
Veil will stay and you have to accept it,if you want or not!

PEACE

When I see an Islamic woman in the street wearing a veil, I do not fall to the ground unconious and start to convulse in a fit of agony.

Muslim women wearing the hijab do not affect the quality of my life whatsoever. I don't care.

Fair, whats fair is that people who practice muslim or whatever religion it is when told to wear these veils should at the same time have respect for our country(UK) and abide by our rules and rituals.

Personally I think these veils can cause accidents when driving because it impairs their line of vision.
