There are many, many different things. If you choose this for your best answer I'll give you everything I know:

Coppernicus believed the Earth was the center of the solar system, but Galileo proved him wrong by demonstrating that the Earth revolves around the sun.

Before the 20th century nobody considered possible to fly up in the sky, but in 1918 the brothers Wright made their first airplane in South Caroline and flew about 50 feet in the air.

In the 1980 microsoft rejected the possibility that a world wide network might improve business in the USA. 5 years later altavista was making money from the internet, and so microsoft decided to create their AOL page.

About 30 years ago an interesting question was raised in science, and that was the creation of a teletransportation machine. Scientist didn't even know quite well this field. These days it is possible to teletransport molecules from one place to another and these be in two places at the same time.

Tiny black holes were never thought to exist, but after the perception and acknowledgement of the phenomenon known as hawking radiation, tiny black holes (so tiny that not even NYC would be at risk) tiny black holes have been created in a lab in Manhattan. Today, Japanese scientists are considering the possibility of making a 'small' universe in a lab.

During the first world war and after, the CIA was involved in a project called 'Blue Book' to search for extraterrestrial intelligence that could compromise the security of the USA. The project failed to prove the existence of such a thing. But, today we have a world wide and extensive project called SETI (stands for Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) which has proven to 'hear' very different sounds from outer space and has even speculated the existence of some much more advanced cilivisations.

During the 1900's Asimov Issac wrote the three laws applied to robots, he is even credited for coining the term to the american english at the time. Today, there is a humanoid, with highly advanced software and human-like features, called ASIMO. It is considered possible that soon those three laws Asimov wrote might be applied to the next generation of robots.

-To actually FLY to places, instead of going there by hore and carriage! (I think people living in the early 1800's never even thought about a vehicle that could be powered by anything else than hore-power.

-To fly to the moon!!

-I think when we were in the 70s, not many of us expected to actually OWN a computer, let alone being able to talk to people world wide with it.....and actually having a webcam....geez, it seemed so far away back then.

-The introduction of CD's.

-The introduction of DVD's. (AND the fact we can now burn movies or songs we like on to a DVD or CD....amazing!!

Gosh, I know many more examples, but to write them down would take me a few hours at least, so I'm not gonna go there. ;-)
