Amplification is simply the reproduction and strengthening an electronic signal. In a sound system, for example, a signal is introduced through an input "transducer" (a transducer is anything that changes one form of energy into another) such as a microphone, that turns sound waves into electronic equivalent.

That signal is then processed and fed to the amplifier. Here the amplifier significantly increases the signal strength before reaching the loudspeakers, which are the output transducers.

Short answer? Amplified means made stronger.
