I'm just wondering why every time I call my health care consulting nurse they always ask if I'm depressed and then, if i say I don't know, or Yes, it goes on to if I have thoughts of hurting myself or anyone else... or thoughts of suicide. I just called about getting something so i could sleep... I know, sleeping problems are often related to stress and other more serious problems... but even if a person were to answer yes to a question like that, What would the consulting be able to do? ... Just wondering.

Because severe depression relates to most sleeping problems. They need to know if you are depressed just to keep you safe. If you really are depressed, or very anxious then you should tell them. If your answer is yes, which I think your trying to say and you want to know what they would really do about it...well I will tell you about when I called about it. They called the police, which is reasonable, nobody wants you to hurt yourself. That si all that they do, the police deal with it afterwards and they are very compassionate and well-trained with these things. Please be well.

They ask because some medications can make depression worse. If a doctor knows you have ever been depressed in your life, you are going to have to deal with being asked about thoughts of hurting yourself or suicide. Even if you answer yes, there isn't much they can or will do about it. Sometimes they might go to the trouble of having you put in a psychward, but typically they just tell you to find a counsellor and refuse to give you the Xanax you were asking for, but send you home with a useless prescription for Prozac.

They ask because of fear of law suits. Because of the recents murders by moms of their children when having post pardum depression and such. Now physicians take close notice to any signs of depression and take every report very seriously.
