Hi

I have a 1 year old cat who is quite nosy! I love christmas so am already thinking about buying our tree ready for the 1st December. Should I buy real or artificial with a young cat? What is the safest?

I don't think it makes any difference if the tree is artificial or real. My cat never messed with the tree, though she did steal and hide several ornaments which I didn't find again until around June the next year. She also likes to drink out of the tree-stand, which seemed to have no ill effects on her. Just make sure there a couple of presents UNDER the tree for your kitty.

We always had a real tree when the kids were home. Now that they are gone we have changed to a artificial tree. Part of that is because our "house decorating" has gotten a little out of hand. This year we will have 3 or 4 trees. Next year we plan on 5. Artificial tress allow us to set them up earlier. It just takes more time to decorate these days, an artificial tree is just much easier.

Get an artificial tree that already has lights attached to it. That will make decorating easier. Also the tree will not be as messy. Should kitty try to knock the tree down, you won't have a big mess of water all over your floor either.

I had the same problem and I bought a real Christmas tree. Kitty loved to climb the branches and chew the bows on the packages. Check with your Vet to be sure what is best for your cat.

It's not good for the environment - but I love real trees much much more. You have a much truer sense of nature and Christmas with a real tree.

A real tree is heavier - so it is less likely that your cat will be able to knock it over. Your real risk is in ornaments - don't put anything shiny the first two feet up.

A cat would have a harder time climbing an artificial tree, but it is likely s/he will be more interested in the baubles and decorations on the tree than the tree itself. Good luck, you're gonna need it! :-)

definitely arificial. the real tree will attract insects, the cat will pee on it, and after some time the tree will start looking dead.
