is very polite, and ends the conversation with "take care of yourself" is he being friendly or is he interested?

At least he is interested in a friendship. Do you call somebody you don't like ? ;-)

It sounds like a strange thing to say, to me. "Take care of yourself" would be something I would say to my grandmother if she had a cold or something, like "Get well soon."
If I were interested in a girl, I would say something like "See you" or "Talk to you later." If I wasn't interested in a girl, I probably wouldn't have made the call in the first place.

He may be interested in you but is a little nervous himself. Why not suggest getting together and seeing if anything progresses? Was he a friend to start with?
