It is by no means the best area of London to live in, but it's also not the worst. I used to work in Stepney Green and it was OK but nothing spectacular as it's not the richest of boroughs, but it's fairly diverse as there are a lot of students in the area attending Queen Mary's, and the locals are either asian (mostly bangladeshi I think) or proper cockneys :0)

By train - Hammersmith and City line to Euston Square. Short walk to Euston, train to Oxenholme. Say 4 hours roughly. Allow a bit longer for connecting train to Kendal & Windermere.
