The subjunctive is very important in Spanish. I think that the best thing would be to get a book which sets out the grammar and learn the rules as best you can and then practise. For example, you could take the word "ojala" meaning "if only"and practise saying the things that you wish for. After you have practised a bit in this way, it will come naturally. But don't try to run before you can walk. Take it patiently.

Yes, the subjunctive mode, specially present time, is very important and it's used a lot.

Pero, para que yo te enseñe a usarlo, tendría que saber como... :-)
A sentence in subjunctive mode.

The trick is in the word "que". Subjunctive mode needs that "que".

(que) yo enseñe
(que) tu enseñes
(que) él enseñe
etc...

*Remember, it's "enseñe", with the stress in the second syllable, unlike "enseñé", stressed in the last syllable, which is the simple past for to teach or to show.

subjunctive makes your speech or writing sound more sophisticated, but it is hard for english speakers to wrap their heads around since we don't use it very often, or recognize it when we do.

Subjuntive is used for hypothetical situations, things that are not definite, like hopes, wishes, needs, feelings, disagreeing and denial to name a few, but only when the subject changes between the clauses.

For example: I wish my boyfriend was hot.
Deseo que mi novio sea guapo.
I don't think you understand.
No pienso que entiendas

Time and patience is required to learn them. And yes, they are important if you want to express things like "I hope you + verb", "I don't believe you + verb" etc. It is also used in conditionals, with certain time words like "when", when referring to the future. You might want to start by learning a few expressions that always use subjunctive.
