Check with your doctor before you take any more than the recommended dose. If what you're taking isn't getting you to sleep, you have probably developed a tolerance--but that doesn't stop the higher dose from being dangerous. Ask about melatonin--it's a dietary supplement that gives your brain the "it's late, go to sleep" message. It's safe to take with some sleeping pills, but I'm not sure which ones, so again--check with your doctor. You could die of an overdose, of course. However, most pill overdoses are not fatal, though they do result in hospitalization. At best, it's a matter of inducing vomiting or pumping the stomach, combined with activated charcoal to soak up some of the poison. At worst, it means permanent brain damage, especially if there's been a lack of oxygen to the brain... Many patients in minimally conscious or PVS states got that way through a loss of oxygen to the brain. Less damage than that could result in a condition that is a lot like a cross between a stroke patient and mental retardation... basically a general loss in cognitive function. You could also mess up your liver and kidneys, which are the organs that filter poison from your blood. Liver failure is fatal without a transplant; kidney failure requires dialysis, which is a temporary solution at best, until a transplant... A suicide attempt would be placed pretty far down on the list, too, because depression sinks your potential quality of life way down. It would probably not be very painful if you died from a sleeping pill overdose, unless (and this is pretty likely) you were to vomit and aspirate the vomit, resulting in either choking or pneumonia... both of which are pretty darn painful. Anyway, yeah. Not a good idea to play around with sleeping pills.

Why the overdose, I hate those people that feel a bit blue then pops pills for attention. I've known 2 people that have killed themselves, both totally selfish and although they are dead I'm still angry at them. If you're so down, smoke a joint.
