Uninstall the drivers of the sound card.
Reboot your PC.
Reinstall the drivers of the sound card.
Reboot your PC.
If the problem persists, install "K-Lite Mega Codec Pack" codec pack.
Download it from "http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm".
If this still doesnot solve your problem, then uninstall all media players and audio players. Reboot your PC.
Install the desired media / audio player.
If this still doesnot solve your problem, install the latest service pack of the Operating System. Reboot your PC.
One of the above should solve your problem.

may be some driver conflicts over ur system
better if u get some technical person to help u
if u wanna try it for urself u can go to the control pannel and then click on the sound and other hardware devices and play with the settings to check if it works

just restart and check if still the problem persists, try reinstaling the sound card driver from the original mother board Cd gibven to you by the vendor of your computer

press alt+ctrl+del
click on the processes tab n try to figure out if another software is still using the ur sound card..(eg mplayer,winamp).
if yes,end the process...
ps check ur drivers
right click my comp>properties>hardware>device manager>Sound,video etc.....c if ur driver is installed properly.(ie no ?,! or X)

the same problem appened with me. ithink u just reloaded a new os or formatted your disk.this erased your driver of sond card. either get a cd(u might have got it frm da seller) or download it frm da net(first know which hardware u r using)
