Smudging is a traditional ritual from the native people of both North and South America. To smudge is to purify with smoke from specific sacred plants and herbs. Certain plants are held in high esteem and are used for cleansing, purifying and bringing positive influence into your space. The herbs are lit, the flame is gently blown out, and as the smoke arises a feather is often used to move the smoke around the room or person.

A smudge stick is a bundle of dried herbs, most commonly white sage. Often other herbs or plants are used or added and the leaves are usually bound with string in a small bundle and dried. They have a strong pleasant aroma when burnt.

The ceremonies often use smudges of sage, sweet grass, and/or juniper to cleanse with, and to give prayers to the Creator. Smudges with hot coals underneath can provide a lot of smoke for many hours or days to repel mosquitos and other insects.

Smudging is where you are ceremonially cleansed of negative energy by using herbs that are lit then blown out but still smoldering. They ere bundled together in one's hands (in such a way that the person holding them is not burned). While you stand there, another person moves the herbs (usually, but not always sage) up & down over your specific body parts. There is a specific order to which body part is done when.

A smudging ceremoney involves the use of Sacred Sage, used to cover the smell of humans when in Native American ceremonies. It is also used to clear away spirits who do not belong where they are, from what I have read. More information can be obtained from a Native American website, or community center. I hope this helps

No. Certain types of plants like salvia divinorum, which some consider a sage, can cause trips, but the type you use for smudging doesn't. You may feel funny if you smoke it directly, but that's only from oxygen deprivation.
