My Border Collie female has just had a litter of 6 healthy and gorgeous puppies. The is nothing (health wise) wrong with them but one has a very unusual aspect. She was born with a stumpy tail. Rather than full length tail it stops about 2 cm from her butt and doesn't have a typical white tip on it. Is this unusual??

Father was also a Border Collie, they have had litters before, one pup had one blue eye and one brown, but this is the most unusual pup we have had!

I raised a litter of Border Collies, and 2 were born with bobbed tails..My uncle's dog was the sire, and he seemed to think it was common..
Here is a thread discussing one, and if you scroll down there is a pic> http://www.seefido.com/dog-discussion-forum/viewtopic.php?p=19839&sid=e884d3631bbc1e517e093ae35335f9e2
Since Australian cattle dogs are often born bobbed tailed, and you had pups with odd colored eyes, I would suspect that Queensland heeler (Aussie Cattle dog) was in the mix a generation or two back..

It's all in the genes I would have to say. The mother or father might have had parents or some sort of relation to a dog that had a gene for a stumpy tail. Since the gene was recessive, it had a very small chance of appearing in the pups, but it did this time. I don't believe there is anything wrong with the pup healthwise, but if you want to be sure you can always ask your vet. Good luck!

my friends dog gave birth to a puppy with a smaller tail than all the others and she kept that one for her self... he's 2 years old now and he is great....
i don't know for sure but maybe the 2 dogs are relatives? check that out if you can...

I dont think there is any thing wrong. It happend twice (the first accident was: blue and brown). I think there is something wrong with the mom or dads genes or something like that.
