Immigration officers or consuls?
immigration officers do not issue visas, but it is the job of the consular office of one country, anyway
if you are applying for a tourist visa
you will have to state your reason... which is of course to tour their country, establish that you are capable of shouldering all travel expenses such as airfares, taxes, board and lodging, you will also have to establish, being a tourist, you do not have any intention of working in the country that you are going to, or stay there and be subject to overstaying, unless otherwise you need to prolong your stay for recreational purposes only.
they may need to ask for your financial statements or proofs that you have enough means to support you while traveling
ie. bank statements/certificates, travel insurance, passbooks, credit cards, work permit/certification(if employed), certificate of enrollement(if a student). again you have to establish that you will come back home after your trip. they may have to look foe invitations from the sponsors and other documents such as land titles, car registrations, itr's etc.
