they eat canary food. more than likely-the pet store or a vet can tell you the gender. but I have noticed with pets-gender does not matter unless you are breeding them. more often than not-canaries don't breed in captivity.

Its not easy to tell the sex of a canary. Birds have no external sex organs. The only sure ways are to do DNA or surgical sexing, which are both expensive and there is a risk of death in surgical sexing. That being said, if the bird sings its very likely a male. Females rarely sing, and if they do, their song is abbreviated and simple. If it lays an egg it is for sure a female. This time of year males should be starting to sing.
As far as feeding goes, they need more than just canary seed. Also give your bird fresh dark green leafy vegtables, like kale or brocolli, as are other vegtables like cooked carrot, sweet potato, corn and beans. A bit of whole grain bread, like wheat or corn is good. Believe it or not hard boiled egg with the shell is excellent for your bird, but be sure to remove the leftovers after about an hour so it doesnt spoil.

I have had canaries all my life. Only my males ever sang. The females make cute little noises, but no full songs.
Commercial seed as a stable is fine, but your bird will be happier and healthier with something else everyday. They are also less afraid of you if most of the time "the hand" enters their cage it brings something wonderful.
Apples and oranges are favorites and most people keep them at home. Parsley is also adored by all canaries. Oatmeal (no sugar added), soaked beans, hard boiled egg, steamed squash, shredded carrots. Like people, yours will not like everything you offer, my present boy doesn't like pears. Another thing I do on occasion is soak bird seed until it sprouts, then feed the sprouts.
If you don't use chemicals on your lawn you can also give long piece of grass. This will also provide your bird with entertainment, mine love to play with grass.
If you have these (some pets eat them exclusively) meal worms will also bring lots of excitement. It might look like your bird just kills them, as they don't swallow them, but sort of suck them.

u can kno its sex just by looking in between its legs just like u can tell by looking between any other living thing legs..but naw on a serious note.. u can tell by how big and bulk the bird is..if it looks a little bit more built than another then its a guy

You put a mirror(if she looks..., he is not interested), and a slice of pizza with many ingredients(eating only what is good, after a meal). :)
