I haven't imported a dog for quite some years but the price doesn't surprise me at all. Be thankful you don't have to send him to the U.K. first ,for 6mths then on to Australia and the30 days quarantine.Which used to be the rules.
Get some more quotes, also you should be able to do it straight thru the airline. Then you wont have middleman charges.Good luck hope puppy and hubby arrive safe and you all enjoy Australia.

My 3 dogs went from Puerto Rico to North Carolina. Defiantly stressful for them & us.

You're probably very attached to your dog, but you may want to consider selling or giving away your puppy and getting a new one in Australia.

Aside from the cost and quarintine,it can be very hard on the animal and mess up thier puppy mind.

Whatever happens good luch with your move!

I have only heard horror stories of dogs and plane. The most recent one in New York was a Champion Show Dog was lost by the airlines and is still missing.

Some passengers complained that their dog was not given access to water. Other stories include dogs left for hours on hot pavement, during flight lay-overs.

There are private airlines that fly dogs.

Your husband can bring the dog with him. I just flew around the world on Northwest with our very big (and sick) Dalmatian dog as excess baggage. It cost around US $360 to take her, which was the plus.

The minus was that we had to specially beg the airport security at every stop to let us give her water (they all agreed that it was inhumane, and made special arrangements for us), but they DO NOT let you open the cage. We had to squirt the water into her mouth with a water bottle. Luckily or unluckily, she stunk up the baggage hold so badly the next day that they HAD TO let us open the cage to clean it. (She was fine, though very smelly - we were the basket-cases!!) They had to specially dispose of the dirty paper towels as biohazardous waste and everything. Northwest really did bend over backwards to help us, and without their intervention, I just don't know what would have happened.

Still, I think it was so hard because our dog Chicca is HUGE! It might be easier with a puppy. If you decide to take the excess baggage route, please do beg and plead with everybody at every point to let you see your dog. Nobody told us "no" - we saw Chicca at every stop on our trip and gave her water and food through the bars on the crate.

There was another dog that was going from the US to Australia there with our dog, and he seemed fine. (We met in Tokyo - it was his last stop before Oz, so he was going the opposite way as us.) I snuck some water into his water bowl when security wasn't looking, though, because he whined at me when he saw I was giving our dog a drink. It was sad!!

Quarantine can be really hard, though, and often a dog gets very sick while in there. If yours is just a puppy, please do consider giving him to a trusted family member or friend to look after, if at all possible. Our Chicca survived the round-the-world-trip with no problem, but she didn't have to go through quarantine after that.

Give your dog away and get another one when you get to the UK. You'll save tons of money.
