I am thinking of purchasing a Canon sd600 (also known as Digital Ixus 60). The only two criticisms I have read of this camera are:

1) Flimsy plastic battery door - I don't care much about this.
2) Battery life is short and there is no battery meter.

Supposedly the camera only warns you a few minutes before your battery is about to die, and considering that this camera uses a proprietary battery and not AAs, then this might be a significant issue.

So my question is that is there really no "battery meter" option, or is it just some 'advanced' display feature that is turned off by default and the average layperson doesn't know how to turn on?

No, you're correct: the SD600 only warns you when the battery is low. According to Canon, a fully charged battery will give you 160 shots with the LCD on or 600 shots with it off. That should be enough for most days but if you're worried, get a spare.
I'm on my 2nd digital camera and I bought a spare battery for both.
