I truly don't believe "ahotman's" idea will work. If you attached the drill bit to a steel pole, how would the pole connect to the drill? I think this is something that you will have to find a professional person to do this for you.I'm sure you would need a special drill press, which the average DIY person doesn't posses. Why not make your life easier and cut the wood in 1/2? Then route the area for the cord and glue together? With careful wood filling to the seam, and proper sanding, no one will know the deference.

I agree with ahotman's answer, above, and have done something like this for shorter lamps than you're making.
A couple of other possibilities:
1. You only really have to be able to drill 2 feet plus maybe a quarter-inch from each end, to make ends of the "tunnel" meet. You may be able to find a 24" extension at a hardware store/home center, and drill from each end using it. You'll need a bit large enough to make a hole wide enough for the extension's head to enter.
2. If you have access to a grinder and/or Dremel tool, you might be able to grind/cut a cutting surface into the end of a piece of rebar about 25" long and drill from each end of the lamp post. Not optimal, but possible.
