Sore Throat

Home Treatment

Home treatment is usually all that is needed for a sore throat caused by a virus. If you are taking antibiotics for strep throat, these tips will also help you feel better.

Gargle with warm salt water to help reduce swelling and relieve discomfort:
Gargle at least once each hour with 1 tsp( ) (5 g( )) of salt dissolved in 8 fl oz(237 mL) of warm water.
If you have postnasal drip, gargle often to prevent more throat irritation.
Prevent dehydration. Fluids may help thin secretions and soothe an irritated throat. Hot fluids, such as tea or soup, may help decrease throat irritation.
Use a vaporizer or cool air humidifier in your bedroom.
Warm or cool mist may help you feel more comfortable by soothing the swollen air passages. It may also relieve hoarseness. However, don't let your room become uncomfortably cold or very damp.
Use a shallow pan of water to provide moisture in the air through evaporation if you don't have a humidifier. Place the pan in a safe location where no one will trip on it or fall into it.
Stop smoking and avoid secondhand smoke. For more information, see the topic Quitting Tobacco Use.
If you suspect that problems with stomach acid may be causing your sore throat, see the topic Heartburn.

Do not take any Roxithromycin, Erythromycine, or any antibiotics, unless specifically prescribed to you by your physician.

first of all, you should NOT be taking those anitbiotics unless the doctor did a proper test and has determined that you have a bacterial infection.
The vast majority of sore throats are caused by viruses, not bacteria. Antibiotics have NO EFFECT on viruses!

Your screen name makes me think you are from South Asia, where people take WAY too many antibiotics. Not only is it bad for your health and won't make you better, it causes the creation of "Super Bugs" that endanger the health of all other humans and forces people to have to take stronger and stronger antibiotics against bacterial infections that used to be easily cured by plain penicillin.

The BEST relief for a sore throat is to gargle with warm salty water several times per day. It quite dramatically decreases the pain.
Again, NEVER take antibiotics unless you have had proper tests by a doctor!

Try gargling with salt water first (1 Tbsp. salt/cup -- 15 ml salt to 250 ml water). Take a simple pain reliever like aspirin or ibuprofen. Get some rest.

If it is a chronic sore throat, you may have postnasal drip. I have recently started rinsing my nose in the morning and night when I wash my face. (Yes, it's gross -- you snort water, and blow it out until the water comes out clean.) But it's really helped my sore throat -- I've had it almost continuously for 10 years!

If you have a very high fever, or at any time have problems breathing, get in touch with a doctor!

Get well soon!

you need to get to a doctor and get antibiotics and not try to medicate yourself on your own. but in the meantime
gargle with warm salt water. cepestat spray will calm the burning and soreness down but not a substitue for the doctor.

Many sore throats are caused by viruses. If so, the antibiotics will not help and may actually cause harm.

Never. Only time I ever use any pain relief is when I go to the dentist and they have to freeze my gums.
