And their son is afraid of dogs. He tells everyone that he was "mauled" by a dog, but he doesn't have any scars or anything like that. And, I kind of like this guy... My dog, Bear, is being put in his kennel while we eat, but afterwards I want to let him out, he's kind of like a brother to me. How do I do this without scaring this guy?

Love me, love my dog. I seriously wouldn't even consider having someone to my house that would make me put my dog in another room. If your dog is well behaved, there shouldn't be a problem. The guy needs to get over it.

Best just keep your dog outta the way during Turkey day. This kid has been scared by some dog and really you don't want to traumatize him more unless you want to not be friends with this family any more. Plus he may hit your dog since he doesn't understand dog language (if your dog came up to say, "HI"), that could make ugly things happen from you...not a good scene. Just play it cool. Let Fido rule from outside this year or you go out and play with "your brother"..outside too. If the kids sees how much fun you are having, you may be able to help calm some of his fears...At any rate, have a happy Thanksgiving!

I agree 100% with JenP's answer. Love me, love my dog.

Besides, do you really want someone who will make you kennel your dog every time you're together ? You can count on your dog's loyalty through think and thin and also that his love for you is unconditional. Can you say the same about the guy ?

Whatever you decide, Happy Thanksgiving to your and your family.

Its best to either leave your dog confined until company leaves, or only let him out with a leash. And warn the person who has the dog phobia.

Not everyone likes dogs. Make it a habit of keeping yours away from company or you won't have any. If someone likes dogs they'll ask you to let it out to visit.

it would be best to keep these two apart and keep the peace for the holiday
it won't hurt your dog to stay in his kennel while you have company, if you have to take him outside, then put him on leash and go outside
since this visit is a one-time thing, it's no big deal

You could try one of those safety gates used for toddlers, that way it will still seem like your dog is in the same room.
