Start with a professional cleaning and evaluation in your dental office. After that, you have to maintain your clean mouth at home.

Floss, brush your teeth, scrape your tongue, rinse with a mouthwash of your choice. Avoid foods that make bad breath, like onions and garlic. If none of that helps, consult your doctor or dentist to see where the smell is coming from.

If you do a search on the internet using "bad breath" as your search term, you will find almost five MILLION references. Here's a good place to start:

The odors from garlic and onions enter your blood stream and then it takes a couple of DAYS before you breathe it all off. As you do this, you will continue to have bad breath. You can only use a mouthwash or breath mint (sugarless) as needed to mask the odor. I have read a lot of answers here saying to eat parsley to get rid of garlic breath, but I have no personal experience with this. Try it.

Halitosis, oral malodor (scientific term), breath odor, or most commonly bad breath are terms used to describe noticeably unpleasant odors exhaled in breathing.

All the "breath candies" that you're used to seeing in the stores (Altoids, Tic-Tacs, Certs, Ice Breakers, etc...) all commit some kind of fatal mistake in the documented science of creating fresh breath. You see, by now the academic halitosis community knows the causes of bad breath.... and we also know the exact conditions that create an environment in your mouth that is MORE LIKELY to produce bad breath.

So wouldn't you think that a "breath mint" should contain ingredients that make this oral environment less likely to happen? At the very least, there shouldn't be anything in there would make that oral environment WORSE, right?

The top breath fresheners on the market ALL contain either sugar (which the bad breath bacteria absolutely feast on), or they contain an artificial flavor designed to cover-up rather than prevent bad breath and taste.

Treatment

Leaves of parsley, Petroselinum crispum;winter-green, Gaultheria procumbens; or peppermint, Mentha piperita; can be chewed to freshen the breath by the introduction of their aromatic substances into the lungs. A strong tea made of Echinacea spp.; myrrh, Commiphora molmol; and bloodroot, Sanguinaria canadensis; can be used as a daily mouthwash. Fresh apples, citrus fruits, and celery are also good foods for helping to clean out the mouth. Possible homeopathic remedies that may be useful for bad breath include Nux vomica and Kali phosphoricum. Supplementing with zinc and vitamin C may also be of benefit.

Allopathic Treatment

The most effective treatment of bad breath is to treat the cause. If bad breath is a continuing problem or there are other symptoms, such as bleeding gums, a doctor or dentist should be consulted. A medication change may be warranted if a prescription drug is contributing to bad breath. A physician should be consulted any time a change in medication is planned.

If you have a mouth disease, see a dentist.

If you have metallic fillings, replace with acrylic composite, it's white, lasts about as long, but doesn't react with foods like the metallic causing bad breath. A bit pricier than metallic ;0(

Keep your mouth hydrated, drink plenty of water or juice, avoid sugary drinks and don't chew gum.

Brush your tongue as well as your teeth. Any dentist will tell you this. And don't smoke cigarettes. They make you smell bad all over.

Brushing your tongue when you brush your teeth, mouthwash, mints, and gum. If this doesn't help gum disease could be the problem.
