Registered Nurse here; Well hun, there are some home remedies, but i have yet to see any that work. Your very best beat at killing the little pest, it to go to a pharmacy and ask the pharmacist to recommend a product for you. There is Nix, this works great you repeat it after 7 days. Comes with two doses. Thanks for the opportunity to answer your question. Also if money is a factor and your a student go to the school nurse, she or he will glady give you some shampoo to kill the lice.

I have to agree with Strawberry Pony, here. I've seen and heard of lots of alternative cures, but not any that truely work. It's not just the adults you have to kill, but the nits- eggs- as well, or you will be back in this predicament in a few days time. You can't pick them all off, and although a dryer would possibly kill some adults, you will bake your brains in the attempt. I suppose you could shave bald, but that is a bit radical for a solution. Just go to the pharmacy and get some of the shampoo, and be done with it. Gather up all your hats, the pillowcase , your brush and comb, and give them a wash in boiling hot water, then a trip in the dryer. If you can't wash them, bag them and freeze them, or leave them sit a week. If you can't afford the shampoo, see either the school nurse, or the local health department. They will get you some for free. It's no sin to get head lice, but it is a real shame to keep them just because you don't want to use the shampoo.

Rubbing Alcohol worked great on my kids. We had tried everything else and everytime the kids would go back to school they would come home with them again(even after a 2week break from school)

I finally soaked their hair with rubbing alcohol, covered it with saran wrap and then a towel. Let sit for 10 min. Then use a lice comb to remove the dead lice as well as the eggs. Each night use the comb dipped in alcohol to remove any eggs that may have been missed (repeat for a week) Then do another round of alcohol.
Make sure the room is well ventilated, or if possible do it outside while having them tip their head backwards. The smell of the alcohol can be irritating. But that is the only method we use now since it worked so well.

Good luck!

I have heard that putting mayonaise on your head and leaving it for an hour or so is suppose to sufficate the lice. I once used Kerosene. I was desperate and we had spent alot of money trying to get rid of them. My scalp was sore for a while but they were gone!! I also work at a health facility where we had an outbreak of lice. Workers noticed that the residents that used dandrif shampoos didn't have the lice. GOOD LUCK!!

I have used 1 ounce of lavender oil in 16 ounces of baby shampoo. This works great on goats for sucking lice. Can't see how it wouldn't work on humans either since it's natural.

My mom used to use mayonaise on me and would resort to herbs if needed.

I found a link that may be helpful.

I know that vinegar works to get rid of lice eggs, and babies. Give it a go. Also I have heard that kerosine works u just rub it in or something.

I use the vinegar option.

If you insist on not putting poison on your head, you are very likely going to have to shave it.
