I just returned from a medical convention where one speaker spoke on the subject of genomics. This is the study of genetic disease in humans. It appears that almost all diseases we have today are caused by genetic defects we each are born with. By manipulating these genetic defects early in life the goal is to maximize the human life span.

When scientists looked at telemers (these are the genetic ends of cells that are shed each time a cell regenerates) we can calculate the maximum expected lifespan of a human. The length of our telemers indicates the maximum lifespan of a human is 120 years.

Gen 6:3
Then the Lord said, "My Spirit will not contend with man forever, for he is mortal; his days will be a hundred and twenty years ."
NIV

We could have known that all along by just believing what God had told us. Science has taken all this time to figure it out. Now how do you think God knew this. HHMMM! He made us. He ought to know.

Don't have access to an article. This was information that a genetics expert provided in his speech about genomics. I may try and contact him and see if I can get my hands on the hard research. If so, I will put this info on YA.

Intresting fact! Thanks for sharring that! :)

You do know of coarse that this limit on man's years was only after the flood. Because there are accounts of many men living for hundreds of years in the old testiment. Do you think that they had different DNA then?

Look up Cruz Hernandez, or the others that have lived past 120. In May 2006 she turned 128. Now I do think that is a very interesting coincidence, but the study must not be perfect if there are documented cases of people living longer than that. Don't go spouting off about God's "decrees" being proven by science when there are documented cases that prove otherwise. Sheesh

Agreed! :D The Bible is not a scientific textbook, nor does it try to be, but since it is the inspired word of God, and He created all things, it is scientifically accurate. Thousands of years in advance, the Bible was also correct on these different issues:

1. That the Earth is a circle, not flat as was the popular theory for so much of history

2. That the Earth hangs upon nothing- men used to think that all sorts of things held up the Earth, from men ( Atlas) to elephants.

3. That dead animals, dead bodies and human waste is unclean and unsanitary for humans to be near. The Mosaic Law had clear guidelines on these issues; God even went so far as to instruct the Israelites to bury their excrement far from the city and it's water source to avoid the pollution that so many pagan cities were filled with.

Science is the study of the world around us- of course the Creator of the world under observation knows how it works!

Thanks for this info. I had not yet heard this but I am sure it will come in handy, especially on Y!A :)

Telemers are actually switches that can be turned on and off,
like in cancer cells which have them turned on and the cells
will continue to divide until the host dies. Science think they will be able to turn these switches back on in normal cells of aging
humans and stop the aging process all together, and do so
within the next 30 years.

Thank you for that info...

Psalms 118:8
It is better to trust in the Lord Than to put confidence in man.

who was the speaker at the medical convention?

does he have any documented research?
where can i see this scientific study?

if this is true, why was god wrong? men have lived more than 120 years since then. not too long ago a man died at 122 years old.
here is a link to the news story.

www.cnn.com/WORLD/9708/04/obit.oldest

if you do not trust links, just type "oldest person "into your search engine.

hey, i just found another story about a person that died at 128.

Oh Please! That was God talking to Noah. He said that was the time left before the flood. Sarah live to 130 something, Abraham lived longer, Noah live another couple of century or two after the flood.

God did say that in his word during the time of the flood, but later in the Bible at Psalms 90:10 his word states our years shall be seventy, eighty if we have special mightiness.

You're talking about now, but the brain has the storage capacity of over 10,000 years, so clearly we were meant to live much longer.

Do you mean 120 normal years or 120 of god's years, each of which may be 1,000 years or whatever you want it to be really.

Didn't the bible give a lot of different numbers for our lifespan (I clearly remember reading 70 to 80)

Furthermore, if everything in the bible would be literally true, tell me then which of the stories of creation is the right one, and why the other one is then false?
And how about the SonS of God walking around on the earth in Genesis, while the New testament clearly states Jesus is Gods only son?

You can prove everything with bible quotes.
