I recently started renting an apartment that I will be in for a few years. Its a great apartment at an amazing deal but one wall is painted the most hideous color. I found some amazing wallpaper that I love. I know it can be a bit of work to get wallpaper off but is it doable? Will I be able to get it all off and have my deposit returned?

As a long time renter (over 20 yrs), I can tell you I've never had a deposit returned, no matter what condition the property was in.

If you absolutely know you're going to be there for a few years, go ahead and put up the things you enjoy - most of the new wallpapers are easily stripped from the wall.

Another alternative is to put fabric on the walls in lieu of wallpaper, adhering it with a paste of starch and water. To get it off, you simply spray the fabric with water to dissolve the starch, and pull the fabric off. Or, staple the fabric to the wall.

I've been very happy with simply hanging floor to ceiling curtains across one whole wall, also.

If you like it put it up, but ask the landlord first.
