Do it! My friend did this for her 35th. She made little goodie bags for her friends to take home with them - with lotion, exfoliation spa gloves, nail polish, etc. Even though she's married and a mother of 4, it was a fun day to relax with friends.
If you feel more comofortable, call it an open house or lunch celebration for your birthday. Or have your husband send the evites.

Apparently it's considered rather immodest to do so, since it's as good as saying "give me presents!" But I've done it. I get around the problem by having somebody else throw the party(you could knowingly be given a party by your husband, say) or throwing a group party for myself and a few other people whose birthdays are near mine.

I organised my own..
At 23 i put a band on in a pub, and let everyone i knew that it was on. Or im sure they would have been very annoyed that they were not invited.
I plan on organising my 40th birthday in a couple of years, at home. Putting on a band again or a jukebox. bbq etc.
Should be a good night with lots of people alot of catching up with old mates i have seen in a while.
Its all good.
Go for it.

I think it's o.k. to throw yourself a party. It's only tacky if you come right out and ask for gifts. When throwing myself a party, I always let people know that they shouldn't bring anything. That's just me though.

Been there and done that but why not say nothing as to the reason for the party as no one would then feel obligated to give you a present

Just as long as its no gifts. I know many who have done this. Not everyone knows when another person's birthday is these days.

Absolutely YES! Happy birthday to you, and enjoy the party. PS, if you feel uncomfortable about gifts to your own party, then simply put "no gifts please" on the invitation.
