It really depends on the kind of impression you want to make. Red (roses especially) flowers are indicative of love. Yellow are indicative of friendship. If you secretly find out what her favorite type of flowers are and show up with them you may be promoted to god-status. As a girl, I appreciate flowers of any kind, but if its obvious the guy put some thought in selecting the type and color of flowers then I am hopelessly impressed.

Dependa on what role the female plays in your life. Carnations are good for a friend as Roses are good for a girl you love or might want to impress.
