I usually go to a hair stylist to dye my hair, but it is just costing too much now. I like my hair very light blonde. I made the mistake of doing it myself using extra light ash blonde (the whole head b/c I wanted to lighten it a bit). Well, most of my hair looks beautiful...the previous platinum and caramel colors I had look pretty with the new color. However, my roots are an orangish color...I am guessing my natural hair color is too dark, but I have never had that problem before. What can I do myself to make the top of my head blend in with the rest? Is it okay to use a platinum color over the orangey blonde roots? Please help!!

You are right from what I have read. Your natural color is too dark for the box-color. You have messed up the color now and have almost no choice but to go to a professional, if you want it to look good. It is now called a hair color correction...and will cost a pretty penny.

You are not likely going to get the lift you want from a box to match the previous colors. It can be very risky for you to try to match it yourself and as a professional I strongly suggest you go back to your stylist.

Maybe you and her can find a way for it not to cost you so much at one time. I do a split with some of my clients. One time I will do the weave and the next a cut and so on. This works out good for my clients who can't afford to fork out $200 a pop.

Save your money and go to a professional. It's worth it.

Anyway, now that I have confused you to no end. Good luck and God bless.

I had this exact same problem last week...

My natural hair color is an ashy dark blonde with some highlights. I wanted to go a little lighter so I used Loreal Feria hair dye in dark blonde, becuase the dye is usually lighter than they say. In result, my hair turned an orangey color. So, I used a lighter ashy color the next day and it turned even more orange. In result I went to my hair salon and they had to dye it light brown because my hair had been through so much.

Anyway, when you try to dye your hair more than two shades lighter than your natural hair color, your hair is going to have warm tones--or orange tones. Next time, try using a highlightin kit because it just bleaches your hair and it doesn't turn orange. I learned the hard way too.

you need a color with Violet in it. get an ashey color. it will take out the orangey color. or get a lighter and take it lighter fist then put your color just which it. color will not remove color. if you hair gets to dray use a good conditioner with heat for 30 minits. other than that all you can do is go darker. i am a stylist and that is what i would do if you came to me

basically when you try to lighten your hair that is closest to your scalp... the heat from your head accelerates the chemicals and basically makes it work faster than on your shafts and ends. its call hot roots. i would just go to a salon and and ask them to fix your roots. they will probably just charge you for a color retouch.
