I don't understand why people get dogs and then tie them up outside like lawn ornaments. Don't people understand the nature of these animals to be part of a pack? Do they know that dumping the dog outside while the rest of the pack is inside is pure torture? Why do people do these things?

I understand that there are breeds that prefer to run and need a lot of space but putting any dog on a chain is ignorant if you ask me.

Well those people are uneducated pet owners...they don't research the breed they get and give up on training and think leaving it outside will "break" them. I have had to deal with many ignorant people like that and it's so frustrating.
Also, in CA now it is illegal to leave you dog chained in the backyard so that is helping cut down on ignorant people.
These people need to understand that owning a pet is a responsibility and putting them outside without supervision can leave them helpless against wild animals, weather, disease and if they get out even other dangers: cars, environmental hazards and even people. It's really just plain sad.

Oh, you must be talking about my entire neighborhood. I'm only slightly exaggerating, which is sad, because MOST houses in my neighbhorhood own dogs which they leave in the backyards. These poor dogs bark all day and night because they are stuck in the yards, get little exercise and human interaction, and are just plain bored!
Don't even get me started on people that actually chain their dogs in their front yards and never take care of them......

Some people just get dogs for the sake of getting one. They neva really think of caring for it or loving it. Lyk sum ppl just get puppies because they think they look cute and discard them when they grow up. Only idiots would think that puppies would stay the same when the grow up. Dogs become apart of your family, Leaving them outside by themselves is pure cruelty and inhumane. You wouldn't do that to a child!!!!

Our dog wants to be outside. She is not tied up, she can run the yard. When we let her in within seconds she is at the door begging to go out again. She is trained to ring a bell when she wants to go out. (no joke.) She loves to run and chase squirrels, play with her ball, etc. It is not torture for her. It is actually torture for us in the winter when it is too cold to leave her out..she still begs to go out. She is content to sleep in the house at night, though.

i dont know, but i think it's very sad. there used to be this dog that we would drive by and almost every day he would be outside chained to his dog house, and he would literally climb on top of his dog house and sleep there (we all thought it was because the poor thing was so bored and lonely!).

some dogs are happier outside (with other dogs) however it must be said that tying a dog generally makes them more agressive..
dogs do better in fenced yards with shelters, food, and water...
but truthfully not all dogs want to be lap dogs.. some are happier outside (Huskies and Malamutes, for example dont like to be kept in hot houses.. the prefer cool outdoor temps)
