howdy
ok I was watching TV and saw a commercial for a disinfectant spray (LYSOL to be specific) and in the commercial the parent is concerned about the kid putting toys in their mouth that have ROTOVIRUS on them.. so the loving parent sprays the toy with the LYSOL (aerosol) spray.. and it struck me as odd that a parent would prefer their kid to injest chemicals but not natural viruses...
so my question to Doctors is - Which is more dangerous in the long run.. the virus or the chemical spray??
my question to Parents is - Would you not be more concerned about the kid injesting the chemical spray??

America is so germaphobic it's insane. I had a cousin once who was nutso about washing hands with her antibacterial soap and it drove me nuts. The only way to build immunity to bacteria and viruses is to be exposed to them.

I had much the same reaction to that commercial. I personally just wash toys with hot water and soap periodically - I don't freak out a whole lot about germs. Both my kids have been relatively healthy so far. My older one did get rotovirus when he was under a year, but came out of it just fine.

I am way more concerned about the chemicals. I would rather wash with warm soapy water and air dry or if it needs a deep cleaning I will add a little bleach to the water and thats it.

I don't see how it could be good for them to ingest that stuff. YUCK

I'd be more worried about the chemical spray. We don't use them. Instead we use warm soapy water or cider vinegar. Cider vinegar kills germs and is not harmful--you use it in recipes! We use it to clean and to wash produce. It is multi-functional. It can also be used to kill odors so you can spray it around a room to kill bad odors.
