It's a false pregnancy! Dogs normally start to produce milk 24 hours or so before whelping. It's believed that producing milk would be helpful for when the dominant bit.ch (the one who had the puppies in the pack) was out hunting, the lactating non pregnant bitches would stay behind to care for the offspring.

The answer is, yes they can. I had a female, one year old apbt, She had been in heat one time when I bought a jrt that was 8 wks old. The day after I got the puppy She developed milk in 2 teats to nurse him with, I kept them apart for a week and she "dried up", it may not happen very often, but it can happen.

If your dog is not spayed, it is possibly for her to have a "false pregnancy" where she produces milk but does not have puppies. I would advise you to take your dog to the vet if you have any reason to believe she is pregnant (has been around unaltered males).
I would advise you getting her spayed if you don't intend to breed her. It will prevent certain cancers in the future

It's probably a false pregnancy. The dog will act as if she's pregnant, and may start to treat her toys as "babies".Has she had an opportunity to become pregnant;that is ,has she been with a male dog?If not, then it is a false pregnancy. You should have her spayed,as dogs who have false pregnancies are prone to pyometra,a life-threatening infection of the uterus(it fills with pus). They are also more likely to develop cancer of the breast, uterus or ovaries. You should seek the opinion of your vet.
