In the late 1700s some people wanted democratic rule. Conservative elements of the church pointed to the Bible and said it proved that the king ruled by God's will.

In the mid 1800s some people wanted to end slavery. Conservative elements of the church pointed to the Bible and said it proved that God approved of slavery.

In the early 1900s some people wanted to give women the vote. Conservative elements of the church pointed to the Bible and said it proved that God made women inferior to men.

In the mid 1900s some people wanted to end segregation. Conservative elements of the church pointed to the Bible and said it proved God wanted to keep the races separate.

When you look back at how your parents and grandparents dealt with these things, are you ashamed or proud?

Now some people want to allow gay marriage. Conservative elements of the church are pointing to the Bible and saying it proves God hates homosexuality.

You've written a very well thought-out argument in favor of gay marriage. I appreciate the effort, but don't expect it to change anyone's mind. People are too set in their ways to allow reason and logic to sway their opinions.

I Look at how screwed up society is now and I just wish that my folks and ancesters were a little less driven by their emotions and more driven by common sense. You can word things as you have in order to try and demonize Christianity all you want. The reasons for what Christians have stood for through the years are so overwhelimingly apparent to me. Just look at how bad America and the west have deteriorated. Maybe you have no real discernment of right and wrong, maybe you think all is well and that our life styles are ok. You and everyone else will find out different soon enough. Remember our stay here is but a twinkle in time. soon we will all stand before our creator and have too account for the way we lived.

you state it so well... you point out all the total hypocrisies.. some how they can use the bible to state that gay marriage is wrong... but yet they will no longer fight for the right to have slaves that they can abuse...? interesting the bible says its okay and the bible can't be wrong can it? i think some day people will gloss over gay marriage when the next big thing hits... who knows what that will be. i am embarrassed that my ancestors and that people in general use god as a defense to protect their narrow minded view of the world. some of my family still probably feels the conservative way about some of those issues, I'm definitely not proud of them... not really ashamed... they are unfortunate products of brain washing as i see it... i feel sorry for them that they carry that hate around with them in the name of god how sad. i like to think my future family (those not even yet born) will be proud of my open minded liberal beliefs in things such as gay marriage and that i was part of the support for its happening. (and it will someday happen just like all those other things that people were so against....its just a matter of time)

Very good question, and very thought out which is a welcome change in this section! I for one will be happy to see gay marriage become legal. Even though I am both straight and married, I do not see any reason why any couple who feels strongly compelled to become "one" with each other and comit to sharing the rest of their lives togather should not be allowed to do so. I however do believe that gay divorce should be completly ILLEGAL! LOL. So to answer your question My childeren should find themselves proud for being open-minded and not bound by religious intolerance.

And what are you trying to prove? That people before have twisted a faith to their own private means throught centuries? YEAH, DUH! Does that make homosexual relations right? NO! And you will never ever convince Christians that it is right...so if the Bible is continually wrong in your opinion, why the F do you even demand that people cast aside their religion and let you do who..oh sorry..what ever you want? You are going to do it anyways, so just do it! Quit asking for "approval" because you are never going to get it from people who don't think that it is right.

There is nothing to be proud or ashamed of.
It`s just history, and it just gave you a glimpse on how they manage things during their times. If you`re intellectual enough to consider: past/present/future are something for you to think about.
Past events might give you a lesson to learn. If bad management, then don`t do it again. If good management, then you might do such kind of management again in the present times or in the future.
When we talk about God and the Holy Scriptures, it is Divine.
When we talk about the bible scholars, high priest, leaders, faithfuls, bible interpretations, dogmas, rules & regulations, norms and traditions to follow...are all of human elements.
So, differences in God`s belief lies in human interpretations, never of God`s preaching/teachings.
Never ever blame God of bad happenings in your life and the world because it is human doings that He get angry and punish anyone or even the world.
God`s only purpose is to allow you to be born in this world thru your parents, but He gave you a "holy" spirit. He allows you to enjoy His blessings to all humankind, to see the beauty of His creations and to feel how to be a special kind of creations in His likeness and image. He gave you free-will to enjoy fully your life...and just hope He can retrieve back your holy spirit to be reunited with Him in everlasting joy, peace & happiness with you.
Your only duty is to keep and maintain your holy spirit, (don`t mind others if you`re so weak, or bring others to God if you`re so strong in faith)...that you won`t be led astray, misled by others, or be militant that you won`t be snatched by satan (to bring you to everlasting sufferings & fire burning in hell.)

My children will be proud and grateful that I broke from my family's Puritannical ancestry and chose a spiritual path that embraces freedom, equal rights, environmental protection, and love for all life. They will be glad that I worked against the infection of our laws with religious beliefs.

Well.....as a CONSERVATIVE Christian, I have to say that I was ashamed of how my ancestors handled certain situations, but those things they were claiming were unbiblical anyway for the most part. Women SHOULD be subservient to men. Slaves SHOULD be obedient to their masters. (That doesn't mean slavery is okay, just that if you're already a slave you can do much more good by being obedient than by being rebellious.)
But as for homosexual marriage. There is no doubt in my mind, or in God's according to the Bible, that it is just wrong wrong wrong. It goes against everything God intended when he created the institution of marriage. Of course divorce does too, but that hasn't stopped heterosexuals from ruining marriage by means of divorce, now has it?
God doesn't hate homosexuals, He loves them dearly and He weeps everytime one of them gives in to their evil desires.....just as He does when any of us commit any sin. He does hate homosexuality and for us as a nation to condone that behavior.....we WILL be punished for it, just as nations throughout history have been punished for their immorality.

As for democratic rule being unbiblical, I've never heard of that. God blessed this nation for being as free as we are, but he will also punish us if we misuse that freedom.

Are the historical issues of which you speak of public knowledge
and exist so they could be collaborated or did you just assume
they should be factual.

I totally agree. And hopefully a few decades from now, homosexuals will have the right to marry everywhere and it'll be a non-issue.
