If the $8,000 is a discount , than no, you do not pay the tax on the full amount. However if it is a genuine rebate to you from GM, Ford, Chrysler, whatever, yes you do pay the tax on the full amount. This is not the dealers wishes, it is the sales tax laws in the individual states. As far as the state sales tax, it normally is predicated upon, or calculated by the tax rate in your county, or even in your town, if this is different from the rest of the county. For example, in the county I work in, the tax is 7.75%. However, the county seat which is 12 miles north of where I work, has a >25% tax hike for whatever reason so all vehicles sold to residents there pay 8%Make sure that the dealer gives you the rebate forms, and you sign them, thus avoiding any miscommunication. Good Luck.

That is pure BS, unless it's a factory rebate, you would pay the tax on the amount you would actually pay for the truck too. Plus if you live in a different county like I live in Niagara county, our sales tax is 8%, if I buy a car in Erie county which has sales tax for 8.75%, I would only pay the 8% because you pay the sales tax where you live not where the dealer is located, they try to sneak all kinds of stuff past you these days, shame on them!

Unless it's a rebate, that's bs. You pay sales tax on the amount you paid.

It will be easy enough to call your department of motor vehicles to see if it is true. Some states have whacked out tax laws.

Not 100% sure, but I think he's just trying to squeeze a little more profit out of you. Better check it out before paying it.
