Im in college, live in the same dorms, and it seems like people generally go into each others room, sometimes they call, sometimes not. Should I call my friends before coming to their rooms (just down the hall) or just knock on the door and see if they're there?

It does matter. Think of life a few years from now. Do you want people just popping over to your house without calling? Or would you drive all the way across town to visit someone only to find out they're not at home?

Get in the habit NOW of doing the appropriate thing. And ask your friends to do the same. Not in an uppity way. But just say "hey call first to make sure I'm here and it's a good time."

It depends when you are thinking of going. Right after the operation is not a good idea. The best thing to do is to check with the family. My husband has been operated on 3 times and we both appreciated people who checked with us first as he was in no shape in the hospital to deal with visitors. That being said, he loved a short visit once he was home recuperating. Do not appear unannounced that is a no no at all times, in my view.

How nice someone wants to call before you go to the room! I think either way is acceptable, but it is easier for the other person to say "no", if you called first.

Just knock and see. If they dont want company, they wont come to the door.

friendship and mere acquaintance are different relationships. if the other person is a mere acquaint ant, it is better to just knock on the door, where as it is not required in the case of visiting our good, close friends.

Why not ask them which they prefer so you'll know. I think it's nice that you are thoughtful enough to even ask this question! I'm sure there are times that they might like to be alone, or are too busy for company.
