Well...I really wouldn't tell a child that they have to work for their food, but I would make them do chores and secretly accept that as payment. lol

When I turned 14 years old I was required to get a job and begin to buy my own food, clothes, etc. as well as pay my school fees and any other expenses. And, being that I was a child who worked for her food let me tell you that a child should be fed as a RIGHT, not a PRIVILEGE until they are at least 18.

Children need to be given some level of responsibility when they are old enough to follow simple instructions. Food should however be a given. When a young person starts taking responsibility for their life, it's a process and really - the right time is when they move out from under your authority and nurture. You still nurture them and provide help when needed - but you don't baby them you do need to kick them out of the nest eventually. Of course, it is YOUR home and YOU decide the menu options and what they have the opportunity to eat. So if they want special things that you don't want to provide - then let them work to buy their own food in that case. Not enough details to really hit the mark for you with the right answer.

Work for food? You should never make a child work for food unless they are a adult living with you. Then thats a different story, but even with that the only reason they should work for food is if they are out of school.

HUH? Who demands work from a child in exchange for food? Can you clarify a bit?

But the straight answer is never! No child should have to work for food. I just can't even grasp the concept.

18 OR until finished with high school, whichever comes last.

Up until this point it is the parents responsiblity, not just morally but by law as well. No parent can force their children to work. No since in putting your child's education second because you want them to "work for their food".

You should never have a child work for food, especially if this is your own child. However, it's okay to have them work for money. The time for slavery is over.

a child shouldn't have to work for food but if they are responsible enough to get a job, and keep it and keep up on everything else they should be able to spend their money reasonably on anything including food ( parties, pool, candy, snacks). But when they decide school is their choice and by any means decide not to continue going to school (15+) then they need to get a job and earn their keep

They should be required to do a few age-appropriate chores just to help out at home, but work for their food? That's a right, just by having been born.
