If the universe is young and it takes millions of years for light to get to us from many stars, how can we see them? Did God create light in transit? Was the speed of light faster in the past? Does this have anything to do with the big bang? I'm a young-earth believer too, but I'm confused by that.

As a fellow young earth believer, I read a few books that cover radioactive dating, evolution, big bang, plate tectonics. the whole gambit. The light is the only aspect that I have not heard a good rational explanation too. Most scientists use the light in transit answer.
since the rest of the bible is proven true to me, I take the light part on faith. I know that God has said in several places, "he will confuse the wise"

After he created the heaven and the earth his spirit moved on the face of the waters according to Gen 1:2. On day one he said let there be light, and there was light. On day 4 he created the stars, moon and sun. So evidently he invented the light first, and the source of the light later. Sound impossible? Hey he's God. He can do it anyway he wants. He could have just pointed and said I want light to shine on the earth from here with a source behind it, from there, there and there ect. ect. I personally believe that from the time he created the heaven and earth, to day one of creation, could have been billions of years. But I believe the 7 days of creation which put life on earth was a matter of 10,000 years ago. Because, In the beginning the earth was without form and void.

He made the universe appear older than it is.

By the way, even scientists believe that at the moment of the big bang, all of the matter in the universe was propelled faster than the speed of light.

I'm guessing you are one of the world is only 6,000 year old people? you could claim that the flying spaghetti monster (the real creator of life) created the stars millions of years before earth... so we are seeing light from stars long before earth was here... dude get real the world is 4.55 billion years old... you can't mistake that for 6,000. what were the druids wandering around with cave men and dinosaurs all at once... come on and all the other fossil animals that have been found... how did they all live and die in such a short span of time...? try reading some evolution... forget your bible for just a second read some science... but its okay you can still believe in god and that the world is 4 billion years old.... I'm sure god will have an explanation for you when the time comes... have faith.

May I answer you in part by asking you a question...

Of what possible consequence is it to you or any other Christian to hold on to thinking the earth is young when evidence points to it not being so?

Does your salvation depend upon thinking the earth is 6,000 years old? I mean, having spent two decades as a Christian, I never ever came across the first bit of doctrine from any church that said that any of the following sends you to hell, as long as you believe on the sacrifice of Jesus and are "saved" or "born again" or whatever terminology you use...

- accepting evolution

- accepting that the earth is billions, not thousands, of years old

- thinking that Jesus was or was not god. Even that is not part of salvation. Just accepting his gift, the sacrifice of him is, be he human or god.

I mean, c'mon. Christianity will change or it will go the way of the Gods of Mount Olympus.

Wait, on second thought, keep it up.

You know I have thought of this age old question too@!!! Then this pastor brought up a good point. He said, when God created Adam, was he a baby? or was he a man? Well I don't know about you but I always assumed he was a man. SO who's to say that God didn't create a universe and earth as well?

You have two choices:

1) the universe really is more than 10 billion years old, and the Earth is more than 4 billion years old, and Genesis story is only allegory.

2) Genesis is true, but God went to a great deal of effort to set up the universe to deceive us of its true age.

If you believe in God and you believe the Bible is literally true, then why do you think he is deceiving us about the age of the universe?

God told us that He streched out the heavens... I think the light was streched out as God super-naturaly streched out the universe.

Job 9:8Which alone spreadeth out the heavens, and treadeth upon the waves of the sea.

Psa 104:2 Who coverest [thyself] with light as [with] a garment: who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain:

Zec 12:1 The burden of the word of the LORD for Israel, saith the LORD, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him.
