I once saw a sign outside of a store, "Now hiring FRIENDLY people." After laughing, I realized it was true! I , myself, had stayed away b/c of the horrible customer service. The cashiers there were allergic to the word 'hello'. My 2nd job is as a P/T cashier to pay off my student loan, and I make a point to speak and be polite to each customer. Some are seemingly angry and slightly arrogant, too, at first. But you know what? They DO come back. Sometimes, they even accidentally smile as I give them their receipt. With some of the very nasty, evil people who come through, it's amazing we can be kind at ALL. As you can see with yourself, the friendly cashiers are the ones you've noticed and remembered. Good for them!!

They are told to be friendly to the customers. Some people (especially older ones) like it when cashiers give them a lot of attention.
Personally, I prefer to get my stuff and get the heck out of the store. If I want to talk to someone, I will call them. (and I am in the older category).

I would say the store requires it to hopefully make their customers feel important and needed. They are just trying to be friendly. I would rather have a friendly cashier then a sullen, grouchy, long-faced, crabby, look at me like they want me to die cashier. Just smile and be polite. It doesn't hurt for a few minutes.

Because they are bored from ringing through items all day long, and then when they talk to customers it may make the day go faster. They are also told to be friendly. A nice way to let them know your not intersted in small talk is to nicely use sarcasm in a way that they think you are a weirdo say "sorry im an idiot. Plain old idiotic. Please leave me alone" and then they wont be offended but sorry for you.

I would rather the cashiers that wait on me pretend to acknowledge my existence! The ones here lately, I am the one that says "hi, how are you" before they say anyting. I was a JC Pennys a couple of months ago, got up to the cashier she said nothing, I said "how are you" and she didn't respond, so I started responding for her...I said "fine, sleepy, bored, angry, hungry...do any of those fit how your doing?"...the girl looked at me like I was crazy and the cashier standing behind her started cracking up. I swear people don't know how to treat customers....pathetic!

Part of customer service is to make the customer feel as if he is special, so the cashier should be attentive and speak to you as your purchases are being made. They should be making you feel comfortable and happy that you made the purchase at their store. Good customer service sets each store apart from the other, especially with competitive pricing being what it is today.

Good customer service will make a difference to that store's revenue and your coming back as a patron.

I am with maamu above on this answer. I understand that it is part of their training to be sociable, cheerful, and courteous. However, I myself just want to buy my crap and go. If I want to talk and be sociable I'll decide where and when I want to socialize and who with. They don't care what I am making for dinner and I dont care to share what I am making for dinner. If the kumkwats were on sale thats great I don't want to chat about it. I think they should just say hello how are you...and leave it up to the customer to initiate any conversation. The same goes with the hairdresser....minus the making dinner and the kumkwats that were on sale.

...Because that's thier job. I have worked retail for over 5 years. I have trained cashiers to talk to their customers. It creates a more comfortable atmosphere. If you are so bothered by person to person contact, then you should stick to shopping online or hire an assistant to do your shopping for you.

Some people just impress others as open and approachable and are more likely to be chatted up than others.

Maybe you are one of those people. It is probably a positive characteristic, and you may be fortunate to have such an aura.

I can see both sides.

Of course they should be friendly but more than you would think step over the line! I dont' like that either.

Also, i dislike when I ask "So how are you?!" and they are working and say "I can't WAIT to get outta here..." or something else about how awful it is to be there.

Like "Sorry to bug you! Didn't know you were AT WORK!??!"

I would never be that rude to clients in my job.
