it's important to eat three meals a day and two small snacks not only to provide our bodies with adequate nutrition but to also maintain our blood sugar levels.
if we go too long without eating-the blood sugar levels in our bodies drop, causing all of our vitals organs (heart, lungs, brain, etc) to slow down and if not corrected, eventually shut down completely.

We don't Have to eat 3 a day. Many people eat snack-like meals every 2 hrs or so. I think the 3 a day came about because it fit neatly into the daily work schedule. Also, prior to frozen meals/fast food/easy prep foods/microwaves/gas stoves, it was a real job making meals from scratch. Women, primariy, used to spend all day just preparing and cooking the evening meal.

This question came up in my nutrition class. I don't think anyone has a solid answer for it. Eating 3 times a day probably used to be convienient and just contiuned on through the years. No one says you HAVE to eat 3 meals a day though. It is actually better for you to eat 5 small meals in one day.

Eating three meals a day is just a habit...we get hungry about every three to four hours...hence the three meals...some people are considered healthier that eat up to six small meals a day!

Actually 4 or 5 mini meals is better. The theory is that if you go long periods of time without eating your blood sugar gets out of whack and you metablolism can acutally slow down due to your body going into starvation mode.

Not Eating three meals a day you are letting space in for air to pump through your stomach and then cause your stomach to get big.....full of gas.....and then maybe gain some weight.
Best wishes and good luck

After four hours, you will become hungry, because your stomach has emptied. If you aren't hungry, you shouldn't eat just because people eat three meals a day.

No one has yet mentioned this, so I will. Technically, not eating regularly can cause you to gain weight since it lowers your metabolism and sends your body into fasting mode.
