I have been on Prozac for more than 15 years now, and if I remember right it took me a little while until it kicked in. But the Prozac isn't the medication that kept me from "cutting". I went threw a group called: DBT, (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) where you commit yourself for at least 1 year, and see your therapist and doctors as normal. But, you learn coping skills on what to do instead of cutting and how to learn a different way of living. It's a great program, maybe you could ask your therapist if he/she knows of such a program in your area. It really worked for me, as I have been a "cutter" now for more than 45 years, and I can honestly say I haven't cut now for about 3 months. Yes, I know that doesn't sound like very long since I've been doing it for so long and I went threw the program, but each time I want to cut, I find other things to distract me. This DBT Group helps alot of people and it helps you for the rest of your life, because the skills you learn, you take those with you forever.

I took prozac a couple of years ago.Thats a mean drug thats all i have to say. My doc told me that it would kick in after about a couple of days and it didnt kick in until 2 weeks after taking the drug and the side effects are mean. I was no where near over weight but i lost alot of weight within 5 months and i stayed up all the time if i got any sleep it was about maybe 4 hours and i took the drug for about 6 months and i realized it done more to my body than it did for my depression so if you can i would ask the doc for a different depression pill, nobody is worth going through so much mysery. You end up finding yourself so wired throughout the day that you over do things. I couldnt eat or sleep i constantly was doing stuff and loosing so much weight that finally i looked at the mirror and i was so pale and empty i put the bottle never picked it up and never went back to the doc. I hope this helps and dont get so confused on anything it will drive you crazy good luck

Disclaimer: This is not intended as medical advice. For expert help please contact a mental health/medical professional. I have been around many individuals in your situation and what I can tell you is that if you have not already had an appointment with an individual psychotherapist/counselor/social worker......you may want to get one. Empirical evidence suggests that psychotherapy along with psychopharmacological intervention produces the best long term effects. Also, in the beginning it may help you to get over the hump until the Prozac kicks in. I hope this helps. If you are not aware of many resources in your area you may want to take your concerns back to the individual who prescribed you the Prozac. Good luck on your journey.

Ask your doctor for a two-week supply of xanax. It is a quicker-acting anti anxiety med that can help calm you until the prozac kicks in. If the prozac isn't helping after 3 weeks (since it was started) ask your doc to increase dose or try something more for OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder).
