Before you take your child to Auschwitz you need to build background through literature and not through your perspective. In fourth grade the students at my school have to read the Diary of Anne Frank (an excerpt). The diary of Anne Frank can help kids to undertsand what it was like during those times and try to explain why people did what they did to the Jews. When my 9 and 10 year old students read this story I gave them background about Adolph Hitler, his rise to power by default, and why it is said he had such contempt for Jewish people. You also have to ask poignant questions about why people do bad things to other people because of their race or religious beliefs. With the proper background and some major research on your part it can be a life changing experience but be prepared to answer alot of questions. Without the proper preparation it can scar your child.

No; I don't think a nine-year-old could handle the horror of visiting a death camp. If you want to teach her about the Holocaust at that age, find some age-appropriate books, like Lois Lowry's "Number the Stars" or "The Devil's Arithmetic." Wait until she is a few years older to tour Auschwitz; at the age of nine it may scar her more than you intend.

DO NOT DO IT!!! You will devastate her world... Auschwitz is way too terrifying experience for normal adults, but for the child it may become a coming back every night nightmare.
15-16 y.o. might be able to handle this with proper highlights.
Make a right ( for your child) decision.
Best regards.

I wouldn't take a child of that age. I've see the effects of the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC on adults who visited there...I doubt a child could come away from Auschwitz unscathed.

I don't think it's possible to have "highlights" at Auschwitz. Yes...I think it's okay to take a child there. The earlier you teach her what's wrong, the earlier she'll know better. You'll probably have a lot of explaining to do to her.

You'd have to play it down. You could maybe just tell her innocent people were put in jail here a long time ago and leave it like that. If there are displays with images of some of the murder, tortures & starvation, I'd maybe not go in there with her, tell her that's a scarey display and you're going to stay outside in the sun. After a while she'll notice other visitors are crying, so you'll want to deal with that.

Why would you subject a young child to such horror!
You go and then take her to Disneyland...she'll only be a child for few short years!
You may need some closure for family long passed .... she needs to remain a child for awhile longer.
