So I got a 74 on my private pilots test.... what does that mean?
Bad things?

Yeah they said that I passed... But i'm not sure if having a low score will hurt with my job search on up... or if the oral will be harder if they see the low score ( all things i've heard) i was just wondering....

In Canada, you passed. (Min 60% in each of four subjects).

You can breathe easy. As far as getting your private pilot's license is concerned, a low test score won't have any effect. By the time your instructor has signed you off to take the practical exam, it's because he/she feels you are ready, and you're pretty much already a private pilot at that point.

Your practical exam is really not an "exam" at all, it's really more of a checkride. As the manger of my flight school once said to me, "The FAA examiner's job is just to make sure that your flight instructor is not an idiot." =)

The FAA examiner will only have you do a couple of touch-and-go landings, a stall recovery and some turns, 360º and 180º. The latter is to make sure you are able to safely exit out of a cloud or other obscuration should you accidentally encounter IFR weather.

As far as your low test score goes, ask yourself why you didn't do as well as you hoped. Think about how much you really love flying and whether or not you are really dedicated enough to make it a career.

I suffer from dyslexia. I had horrible grades in high school and college. Yet, I scored a perfect 100 on my Private Pilot written exam. And, I scored 97 (on a scale of 1-99) on a pilot-profiling rating used by the Air Force.

I've done miserably at just about every other subject in my life except for this one, because I love flying more than anything, and I've worked and studied really hard to get my PPL and do well on those exams.

You can bring your grades up too, if you get your a-- in gear. I'm a perfect example. As long as you really love flying and dedicate yourself, you'll have a successful career in aviation and don't listen to others telling you otherwise.

Good luck.

It means you passed.
When and if you go for an interview for a commercial job, your hours and credentials will be of importance, not the score on your written exam, A pass/fail is all they will be interested in.
For the oral exam during your practical, the examiner just wants to see the test results so he/she can check off a block on their "checklist"
during the oral, with in minutes they Will know if you have the necessary knowledge to be a private pilot. Do not spend the time worrying about the numerical score, you passed that is what is IMPORTANT!

A 74 means that you should start looking at other ways to get the info more solid if you are going to be safe...

Have you done a DVD course? The Kings DVD's are good and more exciting then Sporty's DVD.

How are you learning the material? Is it in a ground school or by self-study... Reading the book material can be hard at first. Try other ways to study.. I use to wake up first thing and do 1 hr a day on the DVD courses. It seemed to soak in quicker that way and the info didn't seem so vast if you take it one day/ 1 hr at a time.

Good luck.

As far as your oral exam, it really depends on the examiner. Some may see the score and really hammer you on questions others may not even look. I would suggest study really hard and make sure that you are really prepared for the exam. Also as far as your job search if you are planning on going into the airlines they will look at all of your records, so I would make sure that the rest of the exams that you take you do a good job on.

Good luck!!!

The oral will be much harder than if you got a higher score. The examiner will see the results of your written and focus on the areas that you did poorly to make sure you are competent in the areas that you were deficient.

That's about what I got on my private written exam. It only means that you passed the exam and can proceed with your training. My examiner didn't pay too much attention to the grade.
